Buzzfeed's 17 Deplorable Examples of White Privilege

If you changed that 2nd sentence and struck out the words “commit crimes more often and thus”, then you’d be correct. By trying to draw this parallel between actual crimes committed and incarceration rates, you’re again ignoring the fact of white privilege. Of course white people are in jail less, they can game the system better and their crimes are less emotionally reactive (at least on the surface) to a jury. You’re basically admitting to white privilege right there

Can you account for the aforementioned National Crime Victimization Survey?

Female privilege is widely understood to NOT be a reality, given that women have been oppressed historically. White privilege is a reality because people of color have been oppressed historically.

Women are privileged in some contexts. When it’s time to be promoted at work, it’s better to be a man. When it’s time to be sentenced for a crime, or control whether you will bring a fetus to term or not, or stay in high school, or go to college, it’s better to be a woman.

:smack:

For better or for worse, men get to vote on abortion-related legislation.

Not being forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term is a right, not a privilege. If a man was able to somehow move the clump of cells into his own body and carry the pregnancy to term, then it would be a privilege if only women could decide whether the pregnancy would be carried to term.

Privilege is about data and averages over time. Women were, um, PROPERTY, until not that long ago. It’s absurd to say that male privilege doesn’t exist, even if more women graduate from college today. We weren’t even allowed to go to college, again, not that f-ing long ago.

This may be where I have a problem in the privilege discussion. I can go down the “17 deplorable examples” and replace the black/white contrast with a male/female contrast and most of them still work. Being a female means that people won’t assume you’re a criminal; being a female means that you’re less likely to be incarcerated; or shot by the police; or labeled a terrorist; or to drop out of school; or being stopped and frisked.

I don’t know if that’s evidence of anything. But apparently, it’s evidence of “white privilege” and not of “female privilege” because we’re making an ex ante determination that one exists and the other doesn’t. I don’t know how persuasive that is.

It’s absolutely a female privilege. Two people conceive a child, but only one gets to decide if they will abort it or not, due to combination of unchosen physical characteristics, and the decisions made by our society and lawmakers. I’m not saying that it should be otherwise, but it’s a privilege women have. No man gets to choose whether a child he conceived will be born or not, and no one chooses to be male.

The military draft is another area of female privilege.

It sure is, which is why I didn’t say that male privilege didn’t exist. I said female privilege existed in some contexts. Among them is the fact that since 1991, more women than men have entered college and graduated with a degree, and that this gap is actually still growing.

Systematic misogyny and systematic racism are different. They manifest in different ways. Do you need supporting evidence or is this straightforward enough?

Of course I need supporting evidence. Why wouldn’t anyone?

Simply saying that things that are evidence of discrimination of the basis of race aren’t evidence of discrimination on the basis of sex (when they’re even more disproportionate when it comes to sex) isn’t terribly satisfying.

Which part?

The part where the survey has nothing to do with white people gaming the system, committing crimes that are less emotionally reactive, or appearing before a jury.

Regards,
Shodan

Fair enough, that was too broad. Alright, look at Table 40 of this NCVS publication, “Percent distribution of single-offender victimizations, by type of crime and perceived race of offender.”

The numbers for black offenders are way out of proportion to the percentage of the population that is black. For instance, 50.8% of successful robberies in which an injury were reported to be carried out by a black person.

These are surveys of a large but random sample of households. There’s no element of white folks gaming the system to avoid punishment or receive lighter sentences at play here, this is just asking: Were you the victim of a crime, and if so, what happened?

That’s probably just a bunch of white racists reporting it was blacks even when it wasn’t. Remember that Stuart story in Boston? Case closed.

You will never win this.

For the same reason most people don’t need supporting evidence of apples being different than oranges because they’ve seen both and just get that they are different, though both are types of fruit.

Here’s the UN definition of racial discrimination:

the term “racial discrimination” shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin that has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.

There are a lot of similarities between racism and racial discrimination and sexism. Both black people and women were not considered people in the US for a time and not allowed to vote. The goals of the women’s rights movement and civil rights movement are essentially the same: equality.

The timelines for these movements are different. The legislation that affects POC negatively is different legislation than that which affects women negatively. Stop and frisk has little impact on women (mostly men are stopped), but denial of the right to some health care affects only women’s bodies, so does not affect the bodies of black men. Do racism and sexism intersect? Of course!

I am confused about your assertion that gender bias is more common (worse?) than racial bias. It seems like comparing… wait for it… apples and oranges.

So, we should look at this figure:

Inmates By Race

White: 125,844 (59.6 %)
Black: 78,323 (37.1 %)

…and recoil in shock and horror. Fair enough, I agree.

But we should look at this figure:

Inmates By Gender

Male: 196,912 (93.3 %)
Female: 14,238 (6.7 %)

…and shrug?

I’m white and yet I’ve been actively discriminated against. My whole life has been a constant battle against the unfair assumptions that people make about me. And the way society operates means that I’m forever reminded of my “otherness”.

I may be white but I’m also disabled.

The general message of that piece seems to be “white people live a charmed life without many of the societal burdens non-whites face” which ignores any kind of nuance that exists in the real world. It’s a very particular subset of whites (e.g. straight males from upper and upper-middle class backgrounds) who run the show, and anyone–ANYONE–outside that class is operating at an automatic disadvantage.

By treating whites as a monolithic block that gets all the goodies, the notion of “white privilege” insults all the minorities who exist along boundaries not defined by race.

There is lots of evidence that men and women are different at birth, and have different biological strengths and weaknesses (the same is also observed in other species). “Bell Curve” folks aside, there is no credible evidence that observed racial differences are due to biology instead of nurture or societal pressure. That doesn’t justify gender discrimination, but some things are bound to be unequal and people don’t care to address it as much. Things that are unequal and not such a big deal: less provisions for paternal leave, gender bias (as in percentages of each gender, not discrimination) in different fields in academia, or women being at a disadvantage career-wise due to pregnancy/staying at home.

YOU ARE ALL BEING TROLLED. STOP GIVING THIS BULLSHIT, DELIBERATELY STUPID “ARTICLE” ANY MORE EXPOSURE, PLEASE. IT IS JUST A TROLL POST.

More and more, ridiculous articles like this one seem to be becoming the standard, especially in articles designed for social media.

This is NOT an article about white priviledge. It is just a stupid ass troll piece designed to generate outrage/response for the sake clicks / pageviews / visitors / shares / mindshare… ie BUZZ

It’s designed to polarize people and encourage virality. The fact that the “Deplorable” list items are patently stupid and offensive is part of it. The whole point is to get people worked up enough to say something about it to SHARE it and discuss it like we are here. And it hits notes with all the kinds of people who might share something like this:

[ul]
[li]Stupid proponents of the concept of white priviledge share it as an *actual accurate description of white privilege[/li][li]Stupid opponents of the concept of white priviledge share it as an example of how ridiculous the concept of white priviledge is (this is BS! White people have trouble with the law too!)[/li][li]“Thinking” people come in and refute these point by point, and ask their other thinking friends what they think (not about white privilege really, about this article). But their refutation was elicited, they got trolled[/li][li]Insufferable high-minded “enlightened” whites enter the fray for some good old circle jerkery about enlightened this and open your eyes that. But oddly enough the more smug and passive aggressive the post, the more Likes it gets[/li][li]“Smart” people share it with their friends in a “get a load of how stupid this is” sort of way[/li][li]People like me who are “too clever to get trolled by this article” nonetheless actually get exactly that (trolled) and are proven not so clever after all[/li][/ul]

So there’s something in it for everyone.

Look to how useless the comments are to see how useless the articles are.

It’s just a bunch of dumbasses agreeing with other dumbasses, giving standard thumbs up to standard talking points. Some obviously didn’t read the article but came by to drop their 2 cents about white privilege and throw some potshots at white people. Some obviously didn’t read the article but came by to drop their 2 cents about white privilege and throw some potshots at non-white people. And of course, so many of the comments again are trolling…

You see the same kind of articles in lots of tech mags writing troll headlines like “The New iPhone Sucks And Apple Is Dying,” trolling the Apple fanboys and the people who call them “Apple fanboys.”

Please do not treat these articles as anything more than the stupid troll attempt they are.

And the only response you need for troll articles are “get out of my face with that bullshit.”

TLDR: DON’T FEED THE TROLLS

I don’t really understand your point. While I would be interested in support for your assertion that “women were not considered people in the US for a time,” I willingly concede that the United States has a long history of bias against blacks and women.

That being said, none of that addresses the current state of affairs. The idea is that things like incarceration rates, drop-out rates, frequency of unpleasant police encounters, representation at colleges, etc. are “deplorable” examples of white privilege. Fine. But when there is equal or greater disproportionality on the basis of gender, that’s not evidence of anything. And the explanation, as I understand it, is that we begin with the premise that “white privilege” exists (and thus all disproportion is a result of it) but “female privilege” does not exist (therefore, there is another explanation or, if not, we just don’t care). So that, the argument basically goes: Because A is true, B is evidence of A. But, because C is not true, B is not evidence of C. I’m neither a scientist nor a logician, so maybe that’s a common argument, I just find it unsatisfying.

My assertion wasn’t that gender bias is more common or worse than raical bias. My point was that the things that are used to demonstrate evidence of racial bias (incarceration rates; stereotypes of criminality; stop and frisk) show an even stronger gender bias. That is, for exampel, the disparity in incarceration rates based on gender is substantially greater than the disparity based on race. I don’t know that either figure is significant, but what I can’t figure out is why one is “evidence” and the other isn’t.

Do not accusing posters of trolling or being trolls in Great Debates or any forum aside from The BBQ Pit.

(Particularly, do not do so in all caps–an act that will give a number of posters the impression that you are the one engaged in such behavior.)
