Ahh, time tell my favorite potato-license plate story. Way back when, they were redesigning the Maine license plate. This was when American license plates were just starting to deviate from the alphanumeric-only stage. Adding a graphic was a big deal. The downstaters wanted to put a lobster on the new plates. The upstaters wanted a potato – and they backed their argument with statistics that Maine potatoes did more for the employment and economy of the state, by a large margin, than lobster fishing. Well, someone had the good sense to order mock-ups of the competing designs. As you might imagine, the potato plate looked like it contained a big, brown turd! The lobster folks won the fight. ---
