I wouldn’t believe it if it weren’t on Snopes. Apparently someone was so nasty that even their family members wrote them a rotten obituary:

I might actually read the obits page if they were all that honest.
“Audrey was pretty lazy, liked to complain a lot, laughed at the expense of others, did not take authority figures seriously, considered herself above-average in the looks department and was generally quite proud of herself for no good reason…”

I’m sad for that family, that they continue to feel victimized by someone who’s no longer around to torment them.
I hope that they can choose to come together for their own reasons, for their own benefit.

I was hoping for some specific anecdotes. But all we got were vague references like, “Tearing the family apart.”
Still, if they hate mom that much, it was a surprisingly tame obit.

Sounds like something my siblings and I would write for our mother. Not all children have fond, loving memories of their dead parents. Some people have no business _ever_ breeding, and I feel so sad for that family that people will feel obliged to call it hatred, when it just sounds like honesty. I hope they do all find peace and healing now that she is gone. There is a reason I would call the police if my mother ever showed up on my doorstep, I understand what those kids felt.

Well, the writer indicates that there will be no funeral, no “closure”, no coming together for the rest of the family because the mother was so thorough in tearing them apart. It doesn’t really sound like all’s better now.

This reminds me of a former friend’s grandmother. The general sentiment when she died was “Ding dong, the witch is dead.” Only her son attended the funeral, and that was out of a sense of duty, not love.

People might not want specific anecdotes to be made public.
In the snopes article the writer clarified a little by saying she and her siblings were kept “unfed, poorly clothes, and completely terrorized.”

Because you just don’t expect to see those kinds of things in an obit. The thing is also written in a frank, casual way that’s unusual for a newspaper, for an obituary, and maybe for any kind of discussion of this stuff.
