Ech, maybe I’ve had a bit of an identity crisis\* with the mod/admin staff here. I know that they have an under-appreciated job and that they’re doing the best that they can; however, they are all too human. I think **Dex** really stepped in it here, but I’ll never know, will I?
\*A comic book miniseries in which drives home the point that superheroes make human mistakes and have very human feelings (anger, vengance, etc.). Also, my third comic book reference in as many posts here tonight. I think that means that its’ bedtime.

Okay, all joking and references to television characters who haven’t been relevant since the 80s aside, why should we?

I really don’t understand first the decision to remove the post, and now your refusal to put it back. Is it so disgusting, so horribly offensive, that women will faint and men will run in horror? Will our delicate sensibilities be forever compromised? Will we all be resigned to a dark corner, whimpering and sucking our thumbs, because our sensitive minds couldn’t handle the sheer audacity of the thing?

At least if it’s as bad as you say it is, you can point and laugh when you prove everybody wrong.

Seriously, I have trouble understanding the implication that the removed post was worse than the ones on the first page (especially from **umlaut** mocking another poster’s creative career and pouring contempt on him so thoroughly. Maybe **Dex** can’t see how I read the removed post as good-natured ribbing, but I can’t see how he read it as worse than the clearly nasty stuff that wasn’t removed.

Do as I say, not as I do? That’s fucked up. It’s even worse to see moderators defending that sack of shit. No matter what Weirddave said in that thread, that does not excuse \*\*CKDH’\*\*s response. Official or not.

We’re allowed to call people trolls, too. And socks. _When acting in our official capacity!_ I would suspect you can find more examples of that sort of thing if you look. I can’t be bothered.

I’ve been trying to stay out of this thread, but I saw that post too, and all due respect to those who see it differently, there was _nothing_ light-hearted or pushing fun about it.

And now I’m going to return to my former stance, and stay out of this thread.

Just out of curiousity, do the Moderators pay dues as members?

If they do, then I would think it would be questionable as to whether they should be insulting members when not in official capacity. It seems to me that they compromise their athority.

For example, if I had a record of having many heated disputes with a particular moderator when he/she was not acting in his/her official capacity and then was later warned or disciplined by that moderator, that moderator’s decision could be called into question by their record of personal disputes with me.

If they do not pay dues, then I think it’s improper that moderator’s engage in personal insults with members. It’s simply not appropriate to insult your customers

It should be intrinsically obvious that the moderator hat doesn’t simply come off, and if a moderator wishes to be effective he really can’t indulge himself as **Ike** just has without compromising that ability.

So far, for me, it has very easily gone on and come off. There are certainly members I don’t like, and I haven’t taken any grudges out on them, but that doesn’t mean I won’t slam them as a poster when I feel the need. Your way would mean that mods/admins could not fully participate in the board. As we are volunteers, I, at least, would not have taken this position if it meant I couldn’t do my regular reading and posting.

To **wring** : I have posted nothing official in this thread. My official pronouncements have “Moderator Notes:” in the title.

One thing I’ve noticed in my brief time as a mod, is that the “Moderator” under my name does draw more attention to even my regular posts. I’m not sure what can be done about that except to adopt **Scylla** ’s solution, and as I said, I think that’s a bad solution.

Their is a difference between slamming and personal attacks. A person who makes a bad or stupid argument can be dealt with appropriately. Making gratuitous personal insults is an indulgence that compromises a moderator’s abilities.

I personally think it is enough to be cognizant of that fact and refrain from gratuitous personal insults. A wise moderator might conclude that such detract from his/her ability to do a good job.

Even if I grant you this–which is where we do see it differently–do you seriously see it as more vicious than the stuff on the first page of that very thread? If anything were going to be removed, I’d think it’d be the first-page insults.

I wonder if that’s what got **CKDH’s** finger on the trigger and the fact that he didn’t walk in until post # 52 made him throw the switch to full-auto.

In other words, he _had_ given out a general warning to folks about insults, but it came fairly late in the conversation (so he would have been eager to make sure there were no more attacks - he even mentions that later). It would also make sense for **CKDH** to not know that the two had a “friendly-jousting” off-SDMB relation. Taken in that context, his warning to **Weirddave** makes sense, even if his tone, rhetoric, and actions seem excessive.

However, according to board rules, the language **CKDH** used is to be reserved for the Pit. I simply don’t see how the invectives and personal insult (jackass; the troll would fall under clarifying what rule was being broken) were necessary to get the point accross in the warning.

Lastly, the impression that I’m getting from the removal of only _that_ post (and without having seen it) is that it’s ok to personally insult someone’s chosen field of work (ala posts 8 & 26), but whatever you do, for the love of Og, don’t pick on someone’s _hobby_.
