I’m confused about the last sentence here. I don’t know lissener from Adam but “kicking (him) when he’s down”? How is he “down”?
I understand he was booted from the board for a bit because of his Verhoeven affinity… so your drunk driving analogy would mean that now that he’s “down”, he’s been hanging out at the bar, drinking some beers, and dangling his car keys around his finger.
Without having seen the actual post, Dave’s comment seems innocent enough to me. It’s neither insulting nor rude, IMO.
I’d also say that his comparison to the fork lift driver is much more on the mark than a person who dies. I mean, we’re talking about being banned from a message board. It’s hardly life and death.
Finally, we should be able to see the offending post. It’s not the same thing as a troll or spammer. When experienced posters break rules I like to see it so I know what’s allowed and what isn’t. We still don’t know exactly what Dave said, so there’s no way of knowing how offensive it was.
Yea, I think getting banned from the SDMB is equivalent to having a relative killed by a drunk driver. Good analogy.
Look, you can say that my post did not successfully convey a lighthearted tone, and was therefore inappropriate for the Cafe, which is your job as a moderator to do. I have no problem at all with that. However unsuccessfully you think I was at conveying it, I can tell you that there was no malice aforethought towards lissener. I personally don’t care one way or another weather he is banned or not, in fact, he and I have had some very cordial off the board discussions about these type of issues VIA email. The fact is that he got banned for getting worked up over posts about a stupid movie(any movie is stupid if you’re gonna get that worked up about it). That was a dumb thing to get banned for. Now that he’s back, I ribbed him about it, the way I would rib anyone in similar circumstances. You have made your ruling and I won’t do so in the future, but honestly, you’re reading a lot more into this than there was when I made a throwaway post.
C K Dexter Haven, I thought that I was being pretty clear in the OP, but I will be glad to further expand on my thoughts here.
It may be that I am not using the term “revisionist” 100% correctly, but in essence what I am getting at is that if a poster (like me) reads the referenced thread it is clear that something was there, and now it is not. Continuity has been compromised. Personally, I think that this is a horrible idea and sets a pretty bad president. Should we call this censorship? Douchbaggery? Thread Buggery? What would you call it?
Consider just one scenario: The way that you (over)reacted in the post that we can see, I am of the impression that Weirddave is on serious thin ice, and that official warning may well be his last. I mean, you did personally insult him outside of the pit, and used some pretty harsh language in general. In short, it looks as if you had a mini-meltdown.
Well and good. Let us further suppose that this impression is correct and a banning results in the near future. So, what are you going to link to in the ATMB thread announcing it?
Which brings me to one of my other points. Absent any content related to illegal activities, deleting (or moving it to the Jack-secret mod area) that post suggests to me that you did so to spare lissner from having to read it. That being the case, I am forced to conclude that this is a paternalistic and condescending attitude. Also, I am not saying that I want you to send me all of the Spam that you get. I am saying that if we are going to do this I wonder if I can just send you a list of posts that piss me off so that you can delete them as well and thus protect me from myself.
Having said all of that, I don’t really expect any change to come of this. I know that the default setting is that a Moderator admitting an error causes God to kill a kitten or turn all rainbows black or something, but I didn’t want to let it go without comment because it really rubs me the wrong way and I think sets a terrible president.
Your memory doesn’t extend to Collounsbury? Or Mike Masterson/Silo? And I’m certain there are a couple others who were banned and later permitted to return, the specifics of which escape me at the moment.
This explains much. Your judgement is lacking. Lissener, for a long period of time, was one of the largest, most prejudicial assholes ever to post here.
You, too. Lissener’s a militant obnoxious dick. And exactly like every single other banned poster the board admins have permitted to return, will end up permanently banned again.
That’s a great idea. That way, whenever a mod acts like a complete asshole, s/he can go back, edit the post, and make everything rainbows and kittens again.
