I think he had Penn & Teller in the cab and I think Teller sat in the contestant’s chair at first as a gag. ---

Yeah, and they assed it up and blew the money for charity if I remember correctly. I seem to recall CarrotTop and (I think) Louie Anderson together. It was unwatchable. The Opposite of Entertainment. Just Cringe! ---

It’s very lame to not hand over real cash, particularly since it’s all a surprise and the double or nothing risk at the end is dumb if they still have to wait for the money. But I wouldn’t want to walk around with $5000 in cash in New York and I wouldn’t want to work on the legal team for Cash Cab when something tragic eventually happens. Don’t surprise these people with a pre-mugging. ---

Those aren’t IRS purposes. They’re just ordinary practical considerations. They could give out cash if they wanted to which is what I stated. ---

Cash Cab question. It may have been answered but I missed it: Is the cash the contestants handed real? I understand they don’t get to keep it and walk away with it, but is it real currency or just fake “monopoly” money? It looks very real. ---

Movie money looks real enough to fool cashiers sometimes. Dumb cashiers anyway. They are clearly marked and don’t feel the same as real bills. They are good enough that you can’t tell the difference on screen. ---

Ok, now that we’ve satisfied the question in the OP… I don’t believe that losing contestants actually get dumped from the cab in the middle of nowhere. There must be a follow-up car that takes them to their destination?? ---

It’s illegal to be a pedestrian in any of the NYC tunnels. However, there are two days a year, one each where you can run the Lincoln Tunnel (this morning) & the ~~Hugh L Carey~~ Brooklyn-Battery tunnel (Sept); I’ve done both & it’s very cool. That said, NYC does have an active TV & Film office & it’s possible the show had a permit for what they did, which means everything was staged; in which case, I’d guess it was the Lincoln Tunnel with it’s three tubes, making it easier to close one w/o shutting down one direction or the other [Previous page](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/ca-h-cab-conundrum/1017541.md?page=3)
