In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, I made a huge pot of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes (and Irish Soda Bread) for my entire floor of co-workers. (10 of us on this floor.) Everyone really enjoyed it and we (collectively) killed off 2 medium size heads of cabbage.

Ten people, one floor, 2 heads of cabbage.

And I just realized that our windows don’t open.

My wife **tygre** used to work at a hospital office where a few people were trying a new fad diet every week. One week’s diet was “nothing but boiled cabbage for lunch,” every day for the whole week.

By Friday those not on the diet were preparing to call Homeland Security to report a chemical-weapons attack.

Oh man, I just ate near the exact same thing w/o making the connection. St. Pat’s… of course! However, I had the corned beef and potatoes _but_ with cauliflower instead of cabbage. Whew, I’m safe. Phall, here’s hoping no one busts a move at your place.

Three years ago my Family marched in the NY St. Paddy’s Day parade. (A highly unusual honor.) My cousin came over from Ireland to join us.

We went to a typical irish Pub for lunch, and as we sat perusing the menu he said:

“What’s this ‘Corned Beef’, then?”

We all exploded in laughter, greatly confusing and embarassing my cousin.

Turns out that before refrigeration was available, “Corning” beef was the Danish way of pickling it to keep it edible across long sea journeys. So, when the Irish immigrant in America bought any Irish beef, it was always “Corned.” In Ireland, they’ve never heard of the stuff!

They do have something vaguely similar, which they refer to as “Spiced Beef.”

I still chuckle every tim eI think of that. . .

Next time, throw a teaspoon of caraway seeds into the pot before you start to cook the cabbage.

[Cauliflower, Cabbage, Broccoli - same species, same results](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brassica_oleracea)!

To add a lovely savory aroma to the farts?
