# Cafe Society Bugs

No, not the roaches crawling around under the coffee tables…
I’m talking about how my backclick is disabled when I enter the thread.
What’s more, the tasty new hidden spoiler box really seems to bugger up the left hand poster name allocation column. What’s the deal with this?

I can’t help with your backclick, but over in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=99465) **Tuba Diva** is saying that the spoiler tags aren’t cleared for use here yet, so please don’t use 'em. The mods are still testing and seeing if there’s a way of making them not screw things up (the spoiler tags, that is, not the mods).
So what’s up is, the spoiler tags don’t appear to get along well with vBulletin 1.x.

I meant to refer to the “Some Like It Hot” thread over in Cafe Society per the spoiler box.
I also now find that my backclick is disabled in other forums as well. It is the first time that this has ever happened here. Very curious.

The problem is in the past, people have been typing “{spoiler}” before things (except using [and] respectively in place of { and } ), and the new tag requires a closing tag of {/spoiler}. Most people didn’t do that, of course, because it didn’t do anything before.
Unless the Mods want to re-edit every thread that has it to add a “{/spoiler}” tag, or the SDMB wants to upgrade to vBulletin 2.x ( 😃 ), or they want to have someone do some serious php coding ( 😃 ), it looks like it may have to be removed from the replacement variables.

A solution to that could be naming it differently. Maybe even using a spelling that is not an actual word so it wouldn’t interfere. eg:[SPLRS] or [SP] Just my 2¢…

Well, that would help by eliminating all of the cases where previous uses if the word “spoiler” in brackets would mess up things. Then, you would only have to worry about people forgetting the closing tag. However, given how many coding errors happen everyday, that is likely too problematic for the SDMB Staff.

I don’t know if it’s possible or practical, but if somehow the software added a spoiler closing tag to every post, it could take care of the coding errors the mods don’t see or don’t have the time to fix.

Zenster, I’ve noticed the same thing with the Back Button for the last couple weeks on my coputer as well. If memory serves it also started in Cafe Society and spread to the other forums. When I click on the “Back” button, I’m sent to the page from the day before, not the page I was just at, so I have to refresh.

Looks like we can’t get the spoiler tag to work in this version of vB, so we’ve removed it. Hated to do it – could have been fun – but can’t be fixed in this earlier version.
As for your other problem, are you on AOL by any chance? AOL is famous for use of a “proxy server” – you request a page but instead of the most recent version you get sent one from AOL’s cache.
Hitting “CNTRL” + the Refresh key forces the system to go get you the most recent page.

I don’t use AOL but this happens to me _all the time_, but just on the SDMB, and it started after I started visiting Cafe Society.

I dunno why it would be happening to you and JUST in Cafe Society, it’s no different from any of our other forums.
What browser are you using? Let’s start with that.

It also happens to me, and only when I visit the SDMB (although my browser retains the problem when I move onto other sites in the same session). I’ve never personally noticed a Cafe Society connection, but I visit there all the time.
I’m not on AOL, and I’m using Internet Explorer 5.0 on Windows NT 4.0.

I’m using IE v 5.50 on Windows ME. It happens to me at work too, and I think it’s IE v 5.0 on ME.

I’m using IE 5.0 on Windows98, using AT&T Worldnet dialup service. I had the problem in all forums for a couple weeks, but now I’ve noticed it seemed to go away. (For now anyways, I probably just jinxed it!)
