My room-mate, a budding cake decorator, shows me links from that site virtually every day. She’s making a cake for our Superbowl get-together, and asked for a little technical consultation on the field. Those cakes were made by professionals? They look like crap! Even discounting their errors, they don’t look like very high quality work at all. They sure are funny, though! ---

They sure are funny, though! well, define professional … I have known a LOT of deli workers in grocery stores and I know of a single one who has taken a wiltons cake decorating course … and the really heinous ones tend to be by the poor schlub that is working the deli case because he needed an after school job. Although there are some absolutely phenomenal cakes on there done by serious professional cake bakers and decorators … somewhere on there is a link to a non professional that makes the most absolutely fantastic cupcakes… ---

I’ll second that - my mom does amateur cake-decorating, and nothing she has ever made has looked as bad as the cakes on this site. Thanks for reminding me of it, by the way, **NinetyWT** - I had forgotten about it. I have a lot of catching up to do! My own addition to the site would have been my wedding cake. We weren’t going very fancy, so we got a cake from our local Safeway bakery - we picked out a nice, simple sheet cake with white frosting and blue floral trim - you can probably imagine what it would look like. It was a shower cake instead of a wedding cake, because the wedding cakes were all too frou-frou for us. Well, unbeknownst to us, there were TWO shower cakes in the Safeway book of cake-picking, and the lady who took our order did not specify which of the shower cakes we wanted. On our wedding day, we went to pick up the cake, and there was our lovely wedding cake, with a huge, yellow frosted umbrella on it. I think I may have blacked out for a moment when I saw it - there was no yelling or threatening or anything, but they scraped that frosting off and had it re-frosted properly in about 15 seconds flat - they may have seen something in my eyes. 🙂 Oh, and it ended up being free to make up for their error - score! I unfortunately didn’t think to take pictures (too busy trying to remember to breathe and not kill people). I should go back to that bakery and get the shower cake with the yellow umbrella for a party and take a picture of the latest version and send it in. ---

The amateurs surely do this better than the minimum wage bakery workers who sometimes pass for “professionals.” At least they wouldn’t do hopelessly dumb shit like writing, **“Write Welcome On It”** , on it. ---

Well, yeah, but I would think that type of person would be simply writing, “Happy Birfday” on a cake or something, not trying to paint a Mona Lisa cake or build a Sistine Chapel Cake. It looks like a lot of ill-placed effort was actually put into some of those things. Kinda sad, actually.
