Here’s a “probably only amusing to me” story: My name is Robert. I usually go by Robert or Rob. My alma mater sends me letters begging for money at least twice a year. These letters are ostensibly written by the “Class Fund Agents” for my class. These are two women who apparently were at college the same time I was. Their letters always start out with some sort of reminiscence about life at school, something like this: “Say, Bob, do you remember those wonderful fall days we had, sitting on the quad and…” To which my mental response is, “Have we ever met?” They still haven’t seen a dime from me, for other reasons mostly. But I do take this into consideration… ---

I was christened Hendrik in The Netherlands back in 1950. My parents called me Henk which almost sounds like Hank. When I was old enough to attend kindergarten, my teacher informed me that my name should be Henry and so it will be. As I got older, I increasing got umcomfortable with that name. It evoked a candy assed image. Finally , I decided to take matters in my own hans and declared that from hereon in I should be referred to as Hank. Since I have moved around a lot in the past, most of my friends and aquaintances refer to me by that name. However my wife absolutely refuses to call me by that name. Its been over 25 years now and she won’t budge. Many times in social situations, I correct her out of concern that my old name might stick in this community. I’m not about to pit her though. -formerly grienspace ---
