Call of Duty: Black Ops

Most embarrassing thing to happen to me was running out of ammo on my primary, then trying to switch to my secondary instead of reloading or knifing. My secondary happened to be a Strela. I got stabbed for the final kill cam.

Before every single match I play, I look at the lifetime stats on the current lobby, so I’ve developed some opinions on the subject. What constitutes a good score per minute depends on the game mode. The only modes I ever play are TDM and domination.

In domination, there’s not that much spread between good and bad players. A good player will have about 180-200. A weak player will have about 140-160. The highest I’ve ever seen is probably about 250, and you occasionally see guys with scores in the 100-120 range. But because of the nature of the game mode, it’s hard to get too high or too low. I also think that score per minute isn’t a very good indicator of how good you are. My buddy is a lot better at domination than I am, but his lifetime score per minute is 20 points lower than mine.

In TDM there’s a lot more variation. A bad player will be 100-150. Below 100 is abysmal, but you see it sometimes with new players. Anything above about 200 is pretty good. I’m currently at around 250 lifetime. When you see someone in your lobby in the 275 range, you can expect him to dominate. The pros (yes, there are professionals) are in the 350-400 range in public lobbies. If I see someone in the “pro” range before a game starts, I’ll often jump out. If he’s on my team, he’s going to take all the kills, and if I’m going against him I’ll end up frustrated at 10-10 and he’s going to go 35-5.

However, as I’ve mentioned several times in this thread, while score per minute is a pretty good indicator of skill in TDM, it does not always give the whole picture. You can have 300 lifetime score per minute, but if your average K:D is 0.80, you play like a moron and you’ll lose more often than not. And you can have a 125 score per minute, but if you go 5 and 0 each game, you’re always helping your team.

The above is my experience on the PS3.

My most embarrassing moment? It’s happened a few times that my kill is the final killcam and it’s the most pathetic kill ever. You see me running around; you see me spot my victim; you see me aim; you see me fire an entire clip hitting everything but my target; you see me reload; you see me pump out another 20 or 30 bullets continuing to fail; by this time I’m close enough to just quit shooting and stab the guy. But since it’s the final killcam, it goes into dramatic slow motion and you get to see me fail for about ten seconds.

Got to watch a bit of foolishness last night. On Launch, I watched an opponent try to climb out onto the I-beams extending out from the stairwells in the launch tower. He jumped onto the beam, began walking towards the end, and fell off the side. The same guy got me later from that position laying prone. But I got him three times after that since he was extremely obvious.

Would it help my pinging if I hardwired my Wii to the router? I think my wireless connection is not so good. One game last night, the lagging was so bad that there were singnificant gaps in the action. Yet…I was the one who seemed to benefit from it. So of course the game broke connection with 36 seconds to go after I’d had an awesome session.

Chances are, if the game broke connection, you weren’t the host. It might help a little bit, for a wired connection is preferable to a wireless one.

There are videos on Youtube that show you “awesome camping spots” including that one, the ledges on the side of Hotel, and any number of ridiculous places to hide. I don’t understand the fun in joining a map just to sit in a dark corner waiting for somebody to walk by your crosshairs. I much prefer to run and gun and hold a 1.5 KDR with 20 kills than sit still, have a 6KDR and 6 kills.

Yeah, I get bored camping and not contributing. The worst place for snipers is WMD. It seems like the whole map is a maze of snipers nests.

Doesn’t that make it the best place?

Not when you’re on the receiving end.

That’s what frustrates me the most is some jerk who found some spot that has a very restricted field of view, and is just sitting there waiting for me to walk by.

It’s one thing to flank the bad guys, take up a long range sniper position, or hear them coming and set up in ambush, but it’s another to start your round, go find a camping spot, and then just sit there for 2-3 minutes waiting like a spider for someone to wander by.

It’s infuriating on Hardcore TDM; those guys can rack up a lot of kills by doing that, since one shot is usually deadly at those ranges.

Then stay out of those firing lanes. If they’re going to get you, at least make it difficult for them.

Playing Array last night and when I was shooting up a guy sniping from the attena tower, he jumped down and died. I laughed. But then the same thing happened again a minute or two later. I realize now that I got no points for his death either time. So maybe he deliberately suicided to rob me. Are accidental falling deaths counted on the players scoreboard but with no points to the other team?

Believe me, I try to stay under cover. But if I stop to look around, I get hit. If I keep moving, I miss spotting guys.

Yeah, you get a death on your score, but no points are given, unless it’s an assisted suicide, which still gives you the credit for the kill.

Nah, there are two major sniping lanes on that map and about 4 lesser ones. It also helps if you know there’s a sniper there, so you can avoid it or provide covering fire. Assault rifles are so accurate at a distance, covering fire is usually enough to take a sniper out.

I’m not sure if it works the same way as a team kill when you’re playing hardcore TDM. If you get killed by a teammate it doesn’t show up in your deaths.

Like that I-beam guy in the Launch scenario, once I know where you are, I have a good chance of getting you as long as I’m not armed with a shotgun or SMG. That’s one of the reasons I like the Stoner. On short bursts, it’s actually pretty accurate. Just have to make sure to get that second burst in before they shoot back.

It really depends on where they are. As long as you can get close enough before they shoot your face off, an SMG or shutgun is perfectly fine for getting campers and snipers. The only ARs I use regularly (other than picking them up when I run out of ammo) are the M16 and the Enfield. Other than that I run exclusively with SMGs or a Spaz. The only perch I can think of where you really have no way of getting close while remaining in cover is the antenna tower on Array, and even there you can probably pick somebody off with short bursts from cover, unless you’re using a scorpion.

I usually don’t touch the Stoner, but out of that class of weapons, I’d say it’s the best. The M60 is also pretty nice, but that’s a pretty low rate of fire it has.

Stay out of the death areas, assume there are snipers there until proven otherwise, and win the game. See? Easy!

Just started playing Free For All for the first time and man, I rock at that. Well, at least I’m always 2nd place.

And boy, isn’t it fun when you hear it go by your head while stalking through the undergrowth in Jungle.

Is the sound in the game in stereo? One thing about the game is that when you hear gunfire, you can’t tell where it’s coming from. Obviously, if you’re hit, you see the direction of the damage indicator. But if the first burst misses, you don’t know where to look. If you’re lucky, you’ll see your teammate go down first and the tracers give you a clue where the fire came from. I often let a teammate go ahead of me so I can clean up whoever takes them down. But then I get shot in the back. Ah, such is luck. It’s the same with foot steps. I’ll hear somone coming and see no teammates near me on the map. So then I’m looking from side to side to see which door/corner/window they’re coming from. And I can’t tell because of the poor sound.

It would be cool to have a surround sound system that let you hear your surroundings more naturally to address this.
