Call of Duty: Black Ops

I just got a €60 refund for my copy from Steam. Nice guys, those.

It’s a pity. I had a lot of fun with the parts of the single player I got to play and I think I’d have enjoyed the rest as well, but it wasn’t worth the aggrivation. I’ll probably be back by the time they’ve fixed the game and it’s in the bargain bin at my local Gamestop. But until then, have fun!

Got a new laptop and this game to play during the Hajj holidays. I also got a game controller. The controller will not work with the game. This reduces me to hitting W to go forward and so on. I may get used to it, but frankly I find it almost unplayable.

That’s weird, since almost all multiplatform game support gamepads right out of the box. What sort of controller is it?

Anyway, if the game doesn’t support it, you can create your own profile to use the gamepad (by mapping buttons to keys, analog controls to an axis, etc) by using xpadder or pinnacle game profiler

I wouldn’t suggest trying to play online with a gamepad though. You’d be lucky to manage to kill 1 guy for every 8 billion deaths.

A Logipro, I had two Filipino computer-store guys work on it for four hours. I understand I am new at this, but I would have expected them to handle it effectively.

I watched the video, and practiced a little in Combat Training, but I couldn’t bring myself to dive back into Multi-Player last night – I had a budding MLB The Show career to tend to.

However, early this morning before work, I got in a little more practice and I played one Multi-player Death Match where I had 6 kills and 6 deaths. This is my high-water mark so far.

Does anyone know how to view your Combat Record on the 360 version? I’m having a hard time finding my stats at the moment. Somehow I found it the first night I played but I don’t remember what I did and now I can’t find it for the life of me.

Do you have a spare 360 controller? If it’s wired you can just hook it up and use it. If not, you’ll have to get a USB dongle that will connect to it. Like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1289918807&sr=8-7

$35 will allow you to hook up upto 4 xbox360 controllers and headsets

I find that the xbox 360 controllers (or the xbox controllers made specifically for PC) have the widest compatibility in PC games. I’d give the suggestion of mapping controls that Beef gave a shot though. Should work.

Of course, mouse and keyboard are better for FPS’s for a reason. Might want to give that a shot too.

Heck with it. It crashes left, right and center. Tomorrow I will try to get refund for the computer and everything else. With my wonky internet connection, I may never get the fool thing to work.

FWIW, I solved my own problem. Apparently you can’t see your own Combat Record until you hit Level 13 or so.

Heck with it, I am not able to make this thing work. It crashes and I have to watch the whole opening sequence again and again. Somebody in my life is getting a laptop for Christmas.

The spawning metric doesn’t seem to be very good right now. During one match last night I spawned and immediately died to helicopter fire. I respawned in the same spot, died immediately again to the same helicopter. I respawned in the same spot…yep. Three deaths in under ten seconds…well, actually four if you count the death that made me spawn in the first place.

And there are many times when I’ll spawn right in front of an enemy, or I’ll see an enemy spawn right in front of me. It seems as though there are just not enough spawn points in the game; six players should not be able to cover all of the spawn points on the map, especially in the larger maps.

This is true. Spawns seem to be totally jacked up, and I think part of it is because so many complained about setting up to spawn trap people. I don’t see a problem with spawn trapping, for if your team had played better, you wouldn’t be in that predicament. That’s just you being outclassed, at least for a while during that game.

The spawns have always been the worst thing about CoD games to me… I like the protected spawn areas with multiple exit points that Day of Defeat and other HL games had…

I was really disappointed when I got my XBOX and realized that all of my friends were CoD players… but as I said before I would rather play with my friends than play a better game alone with Randoms…

Complaints with PC version:

  1. Inability to “restart round?” in zombie mode. Instead, you’re forced to sit through 5-6 seconds of the same damn cinematic and then reload the map from the lobby. Completely inconvenient and hilariously impractical.

  2. No partying up before joining dedicated servers. Granted, I guess you can only have dedicated servers or matchmaking, not both (or at least, not allow partying in dedicated). There has to be a way to change this to allow yourself to be on the same team as your friend. Joining a dedicated server only to get split up at random leaves a foul taste in my mouth. The only real way to remedy this is to get your own server, which I’m seriously considering. Then again, there’s no guarantee that it would even be popular. I see plenty of empty servers on a daily basis.

  3. Inability to mix partied, private people with public people in zombie mode. They don’t scale the zombies to match how many players you have (stupid), so at least allow pubby people to join me and my friend so we have a shot. Nope, you either have to go entirely public (leaving out any friends), or entirely private. L4D’s system. Learn it. Abuse it. Apply it. Total fail on their part.

I think that’s it. There are other minor things, and I’m sure I’ll think of them later.

Or you could play with Dopers.

I haven’t got many games logged in yet, but Blops marginalizes the sniper class even more with these spawns.

Recorded my first black ops video.

Mainly a test of the process. Chose the very first ffa game I’d played online. (played other modes but not very much, and before I got into the fun of combat training - earning stonking amounts of xp and kd by pwning weedy bots)

Note: Video was WAY smoother than what has ended up on youtube. Don’t know if that’s down to youtube, the software used to convert, or the PC on which the conversion was done.

Better version…

(better PC. Windows Movie Maker)

I had a 29-1 game earlier today that I am editing to post in my file share… on XBOX so I don’t think there is a way to get it on to you tube…

got 12 kills in my first life… then brought out the chopper gunner… cleaned up pretty good… then when that was done I threw out my care package that was still waiting and it ended up being a gun ship…

How’s this game treating you guys?

The new patch made it so spawning after a chopper gunner now doesn’t bring up the red diamonds on people for location after a few seconds. Against good teams, that’s more than enough time to shoot it down, so I know a lot of folks switching to just reconnaissance killstreaks, because it’s simply not worth it.

I played with someone tonight in free for all, so let’s get a room going on the 360, shall we?
