Thanks for the info. I might have to make the effort of going into Chicago in March.
Try Amazon UK - that’s where I got Fifth Elephant, which was published in the UK in November. (I love the Internet.)
I have to agree the latest works are a shade disappointing when one is used to things like Reaper Man, Guards! Guards! and Wyrd Sisters. I guess you can’t expect brilliance every time. I can forgive the Carpe Jugulums if there’s the possibility of an Interesting Times around the corner.
I actually enjoyed Carpe Jugulum and The Last Continent. My favorite part of TLC was his diary part and he was talking about Friday. Went something like this.
Friday: hot, files, pissed on by incontinent grey teddy bear.
That part always has me rolling. Especially if you know that he’s spoofing Australia with this book.
And I liked Carpe Jugulum just because the outcome was unexpected and I like just about anything with the witches in it. Although Equal Rites didn’t end right, IMHO.
When are you going to realize being normal isn’t necessarily a good thing?
Fascinating! Because I liked Moving Pictures and didn’t like Interesting Times… Just goes to show that even his ‘worst’ books aren’t his worst to other folks. Genius that he is!
Oh, and by the way - The Last Continent is absolutely 100% accurate! He has captured the essence of Australia exactly!
I was introduced to Pratchett through the Discworld computer game. It was a lot of fun, but about the trickiest damn puzzle game I’ve ever played. One day I was describing the game to someone who, to my amazement, knew a hell of a lot about every person and place I mentioned. This series of books had been coming out for years, and I hadn’t ever even heard of it, even from the Douglas Adams fans I knew.
As usual, I was introduced to Terry Pratchett by a friend. Same friend what introduced me to nearly everything else. Either him or my brother, who introduced me to everything my friend didn’t.
Yay for Terry Pratchett!
Oh, and if ya like the books, your might want to play the MUD (Multi-User Dungeon). It’s online and you wander around killing things and doing stuff and solving puzzles and almost all of it is based on the books. If you’ve read the books then you’ll get the jokes. Also, the people there are kinda nice.
I sold my soul to Satan for a dollar. I got it in the mail.
I’m already scheduled to go to NYC the first week in April, I gotta find a way to stay longer so I can see Pratchett on April 5.
Unfortunately, I can’t drag my whole bookcase of Terry Pratchett books with me, but I’ll have to be sure to throw what I can carry in my suitcase and beg him to sign when I sees him.
Yes, I’m a big fan.
your humble TubaDiva
PS Also while I’m in NYC I’ll be looking up cards for “Cripple Mr. Onion.” Who wants a set? I’ll let you know about price before I go, if I can, but expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 a set, including rules. Not including postage.
I’ve played there before, Surgo. It’s great. And I played the Discworld game after I was introduced to the books, but I had not read Guards! Guards! yet. I’m reading it now, in fact. And yes, it was a damn tricky game, but also one of the best I’ve ever played.
I don’t know how many out there have read Guards! Guards!, but starting with Men At Arms and seeing Vimes and the Night Watch in those books, it’s really funny to see him as a drunk lying in the gutter and the Night Watch being hated all throughout the city. Just something I had to chuckle at.
When are you going to realize being normal isn’t necessarily a good thing?
I am in love with all of you. And I’m not just saying that.
The thing about Pratchett is that he’s the best mistake I’ve ever made. When I belonged to the SF Book club, G! G! was one of the books they sent you by default-featured selection or something. I was too lazy to send the damn slips back, so the book shows up. I went ahead and paid for it, canceled the membership, and G! G! sat, unread, on a shelf for about a year and a half. Then I went to school in the absolute worst town, and brought him along to because a)I’d read all the Saberhagen and Leiber stuff already, and b)I was too poor to buy new books. I was safely hooked after that. David, I’ll bring the book to either lunch, or the meeting if lunches don’t work out.
Tuba-Put me down for a set of cards. I’ve been looking for them forever. Tal and David, we may need to set up another meeting to play Cripple Mr. Onion.
And yes, David, you will like Small Gods. It’s one of his better, I think.
We interrupt this thread to increase
dramatic tension.
Me Too!
I have just about all of Pratchett’s published books. Had to send to Canada for some of the harder-to-find titles. The only book I really need now (hint) is Eric. If any of you want to swap/trade let me know.
I guess I am a wossname - fan. Millenium Shrimp! I have read all of the books except Sourcery and 5th Elephant. A copy of Sourcery is as I type being mailed to me. I guess I will have to wait for the other one though.
One problem I have had is that I have read the books as I found them, in other words the newest books first. This can cause some problems. For example the last book I read was the Colour of Magic. Now my wife knows the Pratchett books are funny though she hasn’t read any of them. So as I am laying on the floor laughing, she wants to know what is so funny. I point out the line that says “Rincewind, like all Sorcerers, was lean and hungry looking.” Sue still thinks maybe I am too easy to amuse.
“You can be smart or pleasant. For years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.”
Elwood P. Dowd
BTW, talked to somebody today that might be able to speed this process up for me, he’s helping me get the cards together. (I found a supplier earlier, but I would have had to order 1,000 dozen decks. Each. No fooling.)
For those that are wondering what we’re talking about, here’s the game and the rules: Cripple Mr. Onion
Better yet, if you haven’t caught up to Terry Pratchett, start looking for books and start reading. You’ve got a lot of fun ahead of you.
In my post above, it should say wizards not sorcerers in the quote. It’s been a long day.
And Tuba, that link didn’t work for me. Anyone else having problems?
