The fascination with Vegemite is one of the little quirks of the SDMB that I love so much.

To answer the OP, Vegemite thinly spread on hot, buttered (or margarine-ed[?]) toast is a good way to lose your _Veg_inity. Slightly thicker on fresh, soft white bread is also good, but that might be some sort of collective childgood memory for us Aussies. I dunno.

Now, a _really_ cool way to try it is - **oh damn, I’m probably going to start one of those confused US/Aussie/Brit/Canuck discussions about the names of foods, but what the heck** - is to have it on hot, buttered CRUMPETS. Crumpets (where I live, anyway) are round, heavyish, holey, dough-coloured things, which are slightly larger in diameter than an English muffin, but not as thick, and you don’t split them. You need to toast or grill them before they are nice to eat. I seem to remember a collective “WTF?” arose from our US contingent last time we tried to describe them, but if you know what they are, and can get your hands on some, do it!

Mmmmm, Vegemite. Add me to the list of Aussies forced to leave the computer for a few minutes every time a Vegemite thread comes up.

Good onya Loaded…I too was going to mention crumpets, but I felt at a complete loss as to how to describe them to these _aliens_ on the board. 😃

Funnily enough, the first time I had vegemite on crumpets was in Sydney, whilst visiting the rellies when I was about 13 yrs old. Before that, my (Vic based) family had only ever et them with honey, so the vege idea was a novel one.

Since then however, nary a drizzle of honey has touched my precious crumpets. **IT’S VEGEMITE OR NUFFINK.**

Folklore has it that Vegemite is the scrapings from the brewery floor.

I just did a search looking for pictures of crumpets and was surprised that they are manufactured in some places in the US but they don’t look the same as “our” crumpets. I thought Coles would have a picture online as they have a Fly-Buys promotion for Golden Crumpets running ATM, but I gave up trying to get their website to load after 10 minutes. ☹

NOOOOOOOOOOOO !

Butter and honey is the only thing that may grace a crumpet. Perhaps jam in a push, but crumpet toppings should only be sweet. Save the salty, savoury foods for crunchy toast.

Don’t anyone tell **Goo** that I also but anchovy paste on my crumpets, and I think fried or poached eggs taste better served on crumpets than on toast.

One of the best ways to eat vegemite is spread (with butter) on 2 pieces of [Vita-Weats](http://www.arnotts.com/Biscuits/OurBiscuitsP.asp?BID=164) and squishing the crispbread/biscuits together until the vegemite and butter squirms through the holes like little worms…

mmm… a favourite from my primary school days…

</div>

Oh, please.
1 jar of vegemit.
1 tea spoon (you American’s have tea spoons, don’t you?).
Scoop out a lump (well, that sounds good doesn’t it).
Turn the tea spoon upside down (trust me the vegemite will not fall off).
Insert the tea spoon into the mouth hooking the vegemite behind the bottom lip.
Extract the tea spoon leaving the black goop inside (this sounds better and better).
Roll the vengemite around your mouth … sucking gently … mmmm.

Or you can have it on HOT toast, lots of butter, a good amount of vegemite. Ohhhh, I’m shivering thinking of it.

**Caught@Work** , I am a happy little vegemite from way back, and your suggestion makes me faintly nauseous. Yuk!

Aah, **kambucta** , one of the joys of life is Baker’s Delight Cheesymite rolls. Cheese and Vegemite sandwich **GopherGod** , that’s the way to go.

Ah, Vegemite…engine oil and salt in a jar 🙂 Love it.

My personal favourite - make a piece of Vegemite toast as normal, put a slice of cheese on top and throw it under the griller until the cheese has melted. Or on crumpets (sorry, **Goo** , but crumpets were positively _built_ for Vegemite).

Adding a teaspoon or so of Vegemite to a casserole or stew gives it an extra kick too.

Cheese and Vegemite go together so well that you can buy procesed cheese slices with the Vegemite already in the cheese.

I’m with **tavalla** grill the cheese, use it in stews.

When you’ve had the dreaded lurgie for days your first food back on solids should be either Vegemite toast or mashed potato with Vegemite stirred through to taste.
