While most of you might ask yourselves, “Who is this guy???” I have been reading here since the old AOL days. I have followed many fascinating discussions here, and contributed where I could. An example from Cafe Society: In the Lost threads, someone nicknamed the Oriental woman who gave Jack his tattoo as “Me Love You Long Time” with no need to explain the reference. It took me twenty minutes or so to explain that to a coworker this morning. The Sampiro threads are worth the annual fee all by themselves. It is great spending time reading threads where everyone seems to know how to spell. I’ll go back into lurk mode now, thanks for letting me put in my $.02… ---

I come here instead of other BB’s, because I prefer not seeing avatars or signatures, and the board is moderated at the level I find appropriate. And, the discussion is varied enough to indulge whatever mood I might be in. ---

What y’all said. I get to hang out with “thousands of the smartest, hippest people on the planet, plus a few total dipsticks,” talking about all sorts of serious and not-so-serious things. It’s kinda like being back in college, only with more diversity (with regard to age, geographical location, life experience, etc.). ---

I come here for the vast amount of knowledge that is available. Being able to pick the brain of such a variety of intelligent people all in one place is truly awesome. I love the debates (even though I don’t venture into GD very often). They really make me think about WHY I feel the way I do or why I believe what I do. I enjoy sharing my own knowledge and life experience. Even though I’m often disagreed with I feel it is valuable to contribute my unique viewpoints. I also feel that I have made some friends, in fact when passing along info I learned here on the good old Dope I tend to say “A friend of mine said…”. ---

I was practically raised by wolves. I found the Dope in early 2000. In the 7 years since, even though I mostly lurk, you Dopers have been helping me finish becoming an adult. I’ve learned so much about learning to look at things from the other side. I’ve learned that some of the things I do can be really annoying and I’ve let go of some bad habits thanks to Dopers. I learn something new every time I come here. I’ve received excellent support from the Dope though I’ve never started a thread asking “What should I do about my crazy husband” or “How can I deal with X”. I just borrow on the information given so generously to someone else. I like the way the board is moderated. I glad we don’t have avatars or animation. I’m love the variety of opinions and posters. Other boards just don’t compare. And even though I’m an excellent thread-killer, no one has asked me to leave yet. 😉 ---

I like having free advice from many different people at one time. People of varying ages, backgrounds and life stages. If Mom or Dad doesn’t know, I go to the Dope. I know all about the stuff I have already lived - it helps to get advice on the stuff I have yet to experience. I also enjoy reading other people’s life experiences. I’ve always been fascinated by sociology but at the same time don’t get out much or talk to too many people. Now I have a huge database of people’s life stories to read about. ---

I like the quality of the posts (knowledge, humour, idiosyncrasies), the moderation (other boards tend to bore or irritate me) and the wide range of knowledge. 🙂 Ask ‘what is this film?’ and there will be a fantastically swift response. Ask about mathematics, astronomy, kittens, Tolkien or behaviour and the viewpoints flood in. :o This is the only Internet site I pay for. 😃 ---

If I want to know what’s really happening, I search the current threads on the Dope. Then I’ll go to the linked page and read the news stories. I found my all-consuming vice in Cafe Society, thanks to those City of Heroes/Villains fans who kept talking about how great the game was. I am this year’s Champion of the SDMB Keeper fantasy football league, and I’m still stunned that of all the experts and number crunchers I manged to take it all. I lurk way more than I post, which is OK- I’m not that good at writing my experiences but I usually find someone else in the same boat here, and can relate. And where else would I get an ego-boost and attention from **faithfool**? ---

I never realized how much I was used to “SDMB-style” posting until a recent experience at another board I check into from time to time. One poster there posted something way out, venturing into tinfoil-hat territory, and did not back it up with any kind of authority. I asked for a cite–and was piled on by the other posters! Why would I need one? Couldn’t I take Poster X at his or her word? I must be a troll. :rolleyes: Of course, they wouldn’t have lasted two minutes here. As we all know, the SDMB does not suffer fools gladly. That’s one of the things I like about it. The people here are good, rational folks. If a cite is called for, they expect one. If it is forgotten, they will remind you one is needed. If one is not–in, say, an IMHO thread–that’s okay too; just as long as we all know the difference. It may not seem so at times, but they really are open to any point of view, as long as it can be defended reasonably and logically. They are capable of laughing, of having fun online, as well as being serious when it is called for. Another thing I very much like–and I’ll say this as a former college-level teacher of writing skills–is the written language Dopers use. Generally, there are no irritating (to me anyway) Internet abbreviations like “ppl” for “people,” or “b/c” for “because.” Posters here can and do express themselves in complete sentences using entire words. That’s refreshing. I’ve met a few Dopers in person, and all of them have been great people. One or two are close friends. I’ve received advice on from many more on decisions I’ve had to make that will affect my life as a whole. Their information has been accurate and helpful. I like it here. I may not post much, but I feel welcome here. Not sure if this is the kind of answer the OP is looking for, but I hope it is OK. ---

The sheer volume of people using the board, whether lurking or actively posting, and the high level of activity on it. I’m involved with a few other message boards that are more specifically dedicated to my interests, and after the SDMB I barely check them once a week because they’re soooooooo slow to update. In here, it’s a constant frenzy; I’ve had OP’s sink off of page 1 within 10 minutes before! The result of this is that the board is constantly stimulating and active, and if I want to talk about something or get an answer to something, someone usually responds within minutes. ---

Other than emergency services, Dopers constitute my largest friend group.
