Is Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup meant to be eaten as a soup or is it meant to be used in other dishes as a sauce? The question is tearing our household apart. We have hereby agreed to tally up the answers to this thread and use them as ammunition in our ongoing battle, but not to abide by them, because obviously I am right about this and they are wrong. 😃 ---

Of course it’s meant to be a soup; it just happens that lots of people, perhaps even the majority, use it for something else. ---

We use a lot of this delicious stuff. I’d estimate that only about 25% of it is consumed as soup in our household. The rest goes into various recipes. ---

It’s meant to be eaten as soup. And it’s meant to be used in other recipes. ---

I’ve used it as both. But mostly as sauce in my household. ---

Both. My grandma always added an extra can of mushrooms when she made the soup. Yum. (Don’t eat it or like it as much as I used to, though.) GT ---

My dearly departed aunt was the first I knew to make the green bean dish out of canned beans, muchroom soup, and canned onion rings that was on the back of one of the cans. It became a staple at all family gatherings and was better than the reputed ambrosia. Therefore, a sauce. And yeah, Aunt Ilene, I still miss you. Allergies are bad tonight, there seems to be something in my eye. ---

I use it as soup, my SO uses it over baked green beans with caramelized crispy onions on top. We disagree highly, obviously. ---

a SOUP?!? Gack…shudder…not in this house. That “stuff” is used to braise pork chops and then add a can or two of canned potatoes. Nutmeg on top, of course. ---

We use it to make Irish-Italian Spaghetti, but yeah, I’d assume it’s a soup too. -Lil ---

I use it as an ingredient in several casseroles, but I would not be averse to eating it as a soup. Now, Campbell’s _Golden_ Mushroom, that one is just not for eating. That one’s a recipe ingredient only, and eating it like a soup just wouldn’t be right. ---
