Many people who are in severe and debillitating pain can’t get pain medication because people like ladyfoxfyre and the DEA are so worried about abuse that doctors are afraid to prescribe pain medication.
Q.E.D are you now the official righter of wrongs? The sword of justice? Or just meddlesome?
Um, no. Actually, the people who are in debilitating pain can’t get pain medication because of people who continue to abuse pain medications like it’s their job, making healthcare providers skeptical of anyone who tries to obtain narcotics anymore.
I don’t really have a dog in this fight, but **diggleblop **is an admitted opiate addict in methadone treatment. **ladyfoxfyre **is really not at all off base with this specific case, although I may disagree with her on the larger issue (that is, I think even junkies deserve pain meds and I don’t think pharmacists should confiscate prescriptions, just as a general rule).
Actually, I never said that I believe pharmacists should confiscate prescriptions. Like I said, my general practice is to write the date of the previous fill on top of the script, making it more difficult for them to take it somewhere else to be filled. That’s an immediate indicator of an abuser: you try to take it somewhere else, you’re getting it early and breaking the rules. You wait until you’re due for it, you’re a responsible patient who isn’t trying to pull any shit.
ETA: I however, do not believe that junkies deserve to abuse pain meds. Use them, yes. Abuse them, no.
It’s not my hypersensitivity to the issue that is the reason people aren’t getting pain meds. It’s been this way since the pharmacist had just as much legal liability as the doctor when the patient got the pills early and it caused them physical harm. It’s also the fact that more and more of these pills are showing up on the street. The only doctors that I know of that are leery of prescribing narcs are ER docs, because they are the most frequently targeted for quick fixes. This did not start with the pharmacy, it started with the junkies and then became our responsibility.
Wow, thanks for all the links, guys ! Kudos ! The other information is great as well. It is very humiliating when this happens to you, because this pharmacy is very busy with a ready staff of about ten behind the large counter and roughly 8-10 standing around waiting for their meds at any given time. So, about 20 people viewed me as a drug addict, pill searcher… lol It’s ashame and it makes me mad when good pharmacists have been duped so many times that they don’t trust anybody any longer.
