# Can ads be filtered on the main Straight Dope page?

While I’ve only been a member of this msg board since 2000, I have been reading the Straight Dope column online for longer than that, and the paper column before that.

However, I will stop reading the column if animated advertisements become common. They arouse my ire.

Is there a way the SD main page can decline animated ads? They are one of the most literally disgusting forms of advertisements I’ve ever seen.

I don’t block other forms of ads, both through inability and principle, so the SD is getting revenue from me through other channels, just not through animated ads if this continues.

If you don’t click on the ad, the SDMB doesn’t get the revenue.

That may not necessarily be true. Lots of advertising is sold on a per-impression basis rather than per-click.

As for the OP, I’d recommend just getting AdBlock (if you’re using FireFox.) You can set the filters to be as specific as you want – let the Google text-ads through and block the Flash ones, for instance.
