The only way to afford a large crew of henchmen is make them forage for their own food. It worked for medieval armies and it still works today.

Can you image what Amazon would charge to deliver groceries way out there? 😃

Right. I didn’t mean paved roads. Just that they are much wider than mere trails from people or animals walking through. These were cut through the vegetation at some point, and have probably been maintained since.
