Well, these recordings exist, and some of us have them. We didn’t make them, we just ended up with them in our houses. I don’t see why a list of our collectables would be objectionable, as long as trading offers were not made in the thread. Anybody want to ask a mod?
Otherwise, if anybody wanted to send me an e-mail and ask what I have in my collection, I wouldn’t be averse to answering.
Has anybody else ever heard every extant Zeppelin outtake and rehearsal?
I’ve asked (11:40 Central) because even if I don’t hear the actual audio, it would still be interesting to know what exists out there. If encouragement is offered from C. K. or Ike I’ll get the ball rolling (unless someone else would rather).
Good point, Shibb, one I’d not even considered but hopfully we can be judicious in our offering and not approach any semblance of a violation.
They exist, and maybe some of us have them… well, since I already mentioned one of mine above, I guess I shouldn’t hedge that… but that doesn’t make trading them legal.
I reckon it’s up to the mods/admins, and they’ve been contacted, so it’s wait and see, but my input is – let’s don’t. At least, let’s don’t post all the info as in “here’s all what I got and when and where and what they played”.
After all, this isn’t a fan board. It’s a board administered by a newspaper. Even posting lists of bootlegs in that format could now be tainted because someone has already expressed an interest in doing some trading. So posting lists could be seen as facilitating off-site trading, even if no one mentions it from here out.
However, I don’t see a problem with referencing bootlegs when answering questions, such as, “I’ve never been able to find a live version of X, does anyone know if they ever played it?” with answers like “Yeah, I have a tape of them playing it in City on Date and it kicks ass”.
If a recording exists of a band member creating a song, one obviously in it’s early stages and reminiscent of but not yet actually the song itself, would that be bootleg?
That’s all I’ve got - the early inklings of what would later be a very famous song. I wasn’t sure what else to call it.
A bootleg is considered to be any recording that is not in a record company’s catalogue of released material. It covers demos, rehearsals, alternate mixes, alternate takes, outtakes, unreleased songs and concerts.
Well, you mustn’t say “bootleg”, lest the mods put moderator hats on their heads. This will necessitate our standing in the giant bong and singing “Going to California” until they take them off.
So what’s rock 'n roll heaven like? It must have one hell of a ban .
Man, are Tom Jone references even appropriate in a thread like this?
Looks like I’ll be asking around to see if any of my friends have PG. The amazon customer reviews speak of the album as thought they were regarding a God. I am intrigued.
I’ll keep this in mind. I’m not planning on buying all of the Zep albums just yet. Money is pretty tight around here since i’m moving to Orlando soon, so I’ll be looking into LZ2, LZ4, and PG.
Well, for a house with many walls I’d prefer some trippy Ralph Steadman paintings rather than Van Gogh…though Starry Night is an awesome picture.
The reason for only one album is because I’m extremely short on cash. I’d have to save up for additional albums, and that would mean forgoing some other purchases I’ve been looking forward to such as the Rocky Anthology boxset, Hunter S Thompson’s The Curse of Lono, Timesplitters 3 for PS2, Dark Side of the Moon CD, cat burglar equipment for stelaing Van Gogh’s Starry Night, and maybe some some noir in whatever formats it comes in because a story I’m writing is going to be in that style and I need to research it.
Plus, it’s very, very rare for me to find a band I consistently enjoy. Green Day is the only band I can honestly think of whose songs I enjoy more often than not. Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chillie Peppers, and a few other bands are coming close to making the list. I need to test the waters before making a major investment, though I’m sure I could grow to love whatever I buy if if I don’t like it initially by some freak chance.
I’ll get around to the other albums eventually. It’ll just take some time. I want to hear what else my radio stations are depriving me of.
Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. I enjoy what I hear of Aerosmith. Again, I’m curious about what I’m missing.
That’s a hell of an offer you’re proposing, but the time for me to spend that much money on something for entertainment just isn’t right. Like I said, I’m moving to Orlando soon and am a crumb of food away from jigging in the street for nickels. It sounds sexy though, I mean the compilation set has got a 5 star average rating with 128 customer reviews…I really don’t think I’ve seen such a rating on Amazon. If this offer is good for a long period of time, I’ll start saving up the money for it. It’ll be awhile untill I can comfortable and sanely afford it though.
The box set is nice looking as well, and more affordable, but it doesn’t contain the dagnabbed song I’m longing to hear again  .
That’s interesting. It’s a great song, weren’t there any fans ever screaming for them to play it at the concerts?
Cleansing isn’t it? I’d really like to know why, psychologically, driving while listening to music feels so good.
When you’re ready to get into hardcore Floyd or punk, come back and yank my chain. I’ll steer you right.
Floyd has its ups and downs, tho the ups are absolutely brilliant. Led Zep’s downs are negligible, and I don’t say that lightly. But they haven’t had the lineup changes Floyd has, and – much as I adore Floyd – Zep enjoys a level of musical virtuosity and range that’s practically unparalleled in the rock world (Traffic, The Grateful Dead, and a few other bands excepted).
If you start out with any of the 3 you’ve mentioned as your likely first choice, you really can’t go wrong. If I had to summarize the differences, I’d say LZ2 is more consistently bluesy (though not always in that crunchy style of WTLB), LZ4 is more rock-radio friendly, and PG is more varied with everything from accoustic interludes to string-infused epics.
The offer stands for as long as you want. Just test the email I sent beforehand and if it’s changed ask a mod to contact me.
While I love them all, here’s another vote for Physical Graffitti if you’re to only buy one. Gets my vote for the finest album ever made.
Bwhaaa, true on some levels but you must admit Bonzo’s Montreaux alone is worth the admission price and Poor Tom is pretty happening. Quirky, but enjoyable.
JoeSki - I don’t know where you are in Florida, but there’s got to be a public library near you somewhere that would have these to borrow for a listen. It’s not the same as owning them but it’s a good start.
I was driving back from working all weekend early one morning and came to a crossroad where I could either drive on in to the office with the data I’d gathered or make a short detour to the beach first to see the sunrise. I chose the beach, pulled out onto the sand, turned the car off and the radio on. Perfectly, without the sound of a commercial or even a DJ The Ocean came on and I knew I’d made the right choice.
Staff thinks a “Bootleg” thread could potentially cause some issues. Sympathetic to their concern and won’t head down that path.
Oh well. Thanks for looking into it, lieu. If you, or anyone who has read this thread, is still interested in looking at my list of collectible recordings, please feel free to send me an e-mail, and maybe tell me about yours, too.
Cool. I’ll start putting aside money, and I expect to have the money in one to three months depending on how a few different things pan out. At that point I’ll look for tha cheapest place to make the purchase.
That’s not a bad idea at all. I’ll take a look next time I head down to mine. They have what looks like a decent CD collection.
As I was reading this thread last night, I also had another window open to the Writer’sWeekly. As I was reading, I clicked on a link in a thread and was forwarded to a article called “When the Levee Breaks”. Keen.
IIRC, When the Levee Breaks was only played twice by Zeppelin, more than anything else because they had to set up a special drum chamber pit for John Bonham in order to (somewhat) replicate the sound of the drums as the song was recorded - which, I imagine, was really quite a hassle to do.
I fell in love with my first girlfriend because of LZ. And it had nothing to do with any smoky boozy party where the music was playing.
Some redneck had written something disparaging about LZ on a graffiti wall at school (keep in mind this is the Deep South where country music was king and all that long haired hippy stuff was suspect – not that the rednecks weren’t doing all the same stuff as the rockers were, because they were… it was just a culture war). Anyway, she wrote the most eloquent, poetic defense of LZ right there next to his scrawl… I’d known her for years, we were friends… and God, she was beautiful… big brown eyes and long brown hair, and smart as anyone I’d ever met… but the soul that came out in her description of just the simple joy of grooving to the Rover etc etc… wow!
I knew there was a soulmate there. I love her to this day.
