Can anyone justify car chases? (involving the police)

I think it is self defeting to prevent car chases. If you know you can simply outrun a cop they why even stop for a minor traffic violation?

They should just get better at catching the criminals faster. They always show these chases on ‘COPS’ where they’ve gotten the perp to stop, then the guy takes off again. Why don’t they just shoot out the guy’s tires as soon as he’s blocked in? Or better yet, if the guy has been fleeing at high speed through residential areas, shoot out the guy’s head. No less dangerous a situation than if he’d drawn a weapon.

I hope I’m getting whooshed…

Yup. Traffic stop. Guy pulls over, cop gets out. BANG BANG BANG BANG ::whoosh:: 4 flats.

“License and registration, please.”

“You rolled through that stop sign 2 blocks back. I’m letting you off with a warning. Please be more careful next time. Move along.”

“How? I have 4 flats!”

( side benefit - Poilice departments largely subsidized by corporate grants from Goodyear, Goodrich, Michelin, Yokohama, etc.)

as far as shooting the guy, leaving aside the marksmanship of shooting the guy doing 75 MPH in the head with a handgun, if you hit him you then have a car doing 75 MPH uncontrolled in a residential area. That might be hazardous.

No woosh, you misread (or I wasn’t clear). I’m talking about when they finally stop a guy who they’ve been pursuing at high speed, who somehow finds an opening and takes off again. I don’t see how this is any less an appropriate situation for lethal force than if the guy was walking around shooting people.

Unless he’s mowing people over with his car,it could be argued that he’s simply trying to elude.

Now if he’s walking around with a Desert Eagle 44 taking pot-shots at anything that moved, then there’s no question what his intent is.

There aredifferences in both scenarios above, however subtle you may think they are, take your time…

OK, so you’re talking about AFTER the chase, preventing a second one, not avoiding the first one. I don’t know how many chases stop and start. I also think most chases aren’t like COPS (most people wear shirts) or the OJ Simpson Car chase/LA parade. I’d recommend caltrops, but some would always get lost.

“Hey Jim, how many you throw ?”

“5 - or was it 6?”

“Well, I have 5 - and the Krispy Kreme light just came on!”

“Musta been 5!” ::leaves::

innocent guy pulls over…pop!.

(I know a lot of cops don’t eat donuts, but that isn’t as funny)

Can you say ‘reading comprehension’? I didn’t say there were no differences in both scenarios, I said they were both equally appropriate for use of lethal force. ‘Trying to elude’ does not change the fact that he is doing so with no consideration for the lives of others. You want to elude, then get out of your car and run. Otherwise your life is forfeit.

Did you see the video of the 19yr old girl who took off with the cop car? She was handcuffed in the back seat and managed to crawl to the front and take the patrol car. She rammed a few cop cars in the ensueing pursuit. So your saying shoot her in the head? So anytime they run just fucking shoot 'em huh?
okey-dokey I have to get back to my mad-max movie now emkay?..

OK thanks,I’ll remember that next time I rob a bank:rolleyes:

After reading this whole thread,
The only solution that I see is to charge the shit out of people who run, I think running to elude the police should carry a HUGE penalty (mandatory minimum sentence) and that the runner should be held LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE for any lives lost or damage incurred during the chase, maybe society can impart to these brainfarts that “running is stupid”.

unclviny

High speed chase. Put down the pipe and refresh your reading skills emkay.

I doubt you’ll remember it.

Put down the pipe and refresh your reading skills emkay. :wally

This turned into a high speed pursuit BTW,so it fits your “shoot them in the head/ your life is forfeit” criteria.

So you never answered this:

Dont waffle now…

I’ve got to side with Badge on this one. For those who think the runner should not be pursued, query this: How different is the operator of a 3,000 pound automobile intent on escape, vs. a person with a handgun intent on escape?

Automobiles and handguns, both used in a licensed lawful manner are safe. Employed in the commission of a crime (flight to avoid apprehension being a crime last time I checked the code) they are both equally dangerous, and I’d vote on a vehicle being even more so.

I hate making a generalization, but believe that if the courts kicked every runner’s ass and added time to his or her sentence, the problem would be resolved. If you have no incentive to run, you won’t, excepting those actors with a psychological condition.

The legal system has come up with this defense: ‘If you hadn’t chased, I’d not have run’ in an effort to mollify the acts of the accused, and the argument is as full of stinky stuff as a bus station bathroom!

Basic concepts= OBEY THE LAW If a law enforcement professional attempts to apprehend you, STOP

I guess this goes against the concept of Cops and robbers, though:smack:

See page one, genius:

Guy is stopped…did you read that correctly Einstein? Car stopped = not moving. He HAD BEEN leading police on a high speed chase. Now he’s blocked in. Don’t take the chance that he may gun it and resume and possibly kill someone in the process, put a bullet in his head.

So your saying shoot her in the head?

OK, let’s put our thinking caps on. I said shoot the guy if he’s stopped after a high speed chase (and let me clarify that by ‘stopped’, I mean stopped by cops, by force. Not stopped on his own accord). You said that the 19 year old girl took off with the cop car and led cops on a high speed chase. Now if we put both thoughts together (try real hard, I’m sure it’s a first) we can conclude that…OK, I know this is tough, you can do it!!!..I think they should’ve shot the girl!

Now that wasn’t too hard was it?

Was it?
Back to my Mad Max movie now…

So if the cops catch someone after a high speed chase, you recommend summary execution?

Of a 19yr old girl no less,it was hard to drag out of him tho…
He got pissy, partially my fault though, I was condescending first…

As Chris Rock observed, “If the Police have to come and get you, they’re bringing an ass-kicking with them.”

ass kicking is a long way from summary execution. Add a couple of years on the sentence? Good idea. Judge/jury/executioner? no.
