> OK. You’ll need to understand some basic terms, forget the pronunciations for the time being.
>
> You will drink beer. Good beer. You will also visit a pub. A pub is a place that decants beer.
>
> Depending upon where you are going to be living, beer comes in different types of glass. In NSW you will ask for a _schooner_. If you come to Victoria, the bartender will laugh at you if you ask for a schooner. In Vic you ask for a _pot_.
>
> If you are buying bottled beer, it comes in two sizes: 700ml is a longneck, 375 ml is a stubbie. It is perfectly couth to drink beer straight of a stubbie, but if you try the same with a longneck, people will assume you’re a hopeless alcoholic. Do not ever try to hide your beer in a paper bag…the assumption noted above applies.

As others have noted, you can now buy a schooner in Melbourne, but it’s a different size to a Sydney schooner and I’m not sure what they use in Adelaide - they’re all messed up they consider West End to be Beer.

Now you have to be prepared to walk into a country pub in NSW and ask for a pony. If you have your mum with you get her a pony shandy.

Not that I saw. I actually was sad enough to check. 425ml, same as NSW.

Now, this is a weird thing. I’ve actually done as you described and ordered a pony or a “seven” for my mum. In the past this was no worries, but in recent years I’ve found a lot of NSW pubs no longer carry the glasses. Smallest is a middy. Similarly, twenty years ago, the middy was what was in the hand of about half the drinkers in a pub, but now it seems to be well on the decline. Everybody seems to be drinking schooners. I’ve seen similar in Victoria, where the seven ounce used to be the thing, and drinking a pot was a bit blokey, but now I never see the seven down there, and pots themselves are starting to give way to schooners (but more usually, pints).

Note to Brits reading this: a schooner is simply a 3/4 pint. IMHO, it is a bloody sensible measure.

Yes, I buy schooners in Melbourne. Don’t forget to answer questions with, “Yeah, no”. As in, “Did your team win on Saturday?” “Yeah, no, they got thrashed”.
Most words are pronounced like baby talk, i.e. Brissie=Brisbane, Tassie=Tasmania, Firey=Fireman, Tinnie= can of beer, Barbie= BBQ, sunnies= sun glasses, Footy= Football, Cossie=bathing costume (bathers).

Hang about cobber, that’s a Kiwismism…dang summut like that. We have a national tv campaign explaining it to the POMS and Aussies.

It’s Aussie too. 90% of Aussie rules players say it when asked about the game on TV.

Aussie Rules players are positively articulate, nay poetic or even silver-tongued, when compared with League players.

True. I find both codes equally tiresome, but the AFL players do at least seem to have necks and opposable thumbs. Mostly.

I think it’s in decline a bit, but I wouldn’t say it’s outdated just yet.
