# Can Calderon govern Mexico?

His [inauguration](http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/breaking_news/16145881.htm) appears inauspicious. I doubt any previous Mexican president has had to take his oath of office while being loudly jeered and reviled by a substantial minority of Congress assembled. Meanwhile, Manuel Lopez Obrador [is still claiming the presidency](http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/world/americas/16136829.htm) and has set up his own “administration” and “cabinet” in his former campaign HQ. What does this portend for the next six years in Mexico?

My brother-in-law is living there, and I hear absolutely nothing from him about Obrador’s refusal to abide by the results.

Sounds like this character is living in a dream world. He’ll be ignored, I’m sure, by all except his ardent loyalists.

Considering what’s been happening in [Oaxaca,](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=394562) I think there’s a lot of continuing grassroots-level unrest in Mexico – which would exist with or without Lopez Obrador, but he may serve as a focal point for it.

The Oaxaca revolt shows no sign of spreading. I doubt seriously it will affect the overall performance of the central government.

The Oacaca strike/uprising doesn’t have anything to do with Calderon. It’s against the corruption of Ruiz and the PRI, and both PAN and PRD officials have called for Ruiz to resign.
