Can Democrats actually stop the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh?

Did Kavanaugh lie when he said Trump performed the single most exhaustive Supreme Court Justice nomination process in the history of our country?

This is silly as fuck. She knows that people can be simultaneously 100% certain about a memory and wrong about that memory. That’s not the same thing as knowing that no one can be 100% certain of a memory. There’s no way you can twist that into a lie.

Kavanaugh, on the other hand, lied about a bunch of little things that he didn’t really even need to lie about.

Beach Week Ralph Club, Renate, Devil’s Triangle, boofing, etc.

This guy chose to give ‘innocent’ answers to sticky questions without regard for the truth. He lied his ass off.

It’s part of a long downhill slide. I have some modicum of respect (not a lot, but some) for John Roberts – despite my disagreeing with virtually all his political views – for his efforts trying to bolster the court’s reputation as having at least some vestiges of an actual institution of justice. I’m sure he’s appalled by this partisan circus.

In spite of their nice-guy routine, those Canadians are tough cookies when it comes to immigration. Good luck getting in.

Jeff Flake knows he’s about to do something wrong by voting to confirm:

I’ll go further, John Mace – Ford’s statement of certainty and Kavanaugh’s explanations about the Renate thing are more than not remotely comparable – it’s disgusting to even try to present them as comparable. One is an obvious lie meant to cast doubt on apparent misogyny in an effort to counter an allegation of sexual assault, and the other is an assertion of confidence about one’s memory of that sexual assault.

Seriously. Just be human here. That post is far beneath your usual standards, IMO.

I felt he was coming up with some absurd explanations about things he was being asked:

Yearbook page – Not me. Editors were influenced by teen party movies.
Boofed Yet – Said Boofed meant farting. (I remember boof meaning sex)
Devils Triangle – Drinking game (common meaning was 3-way sex)
Renate Alumni – She was such a nice girl, I wanted to honor her
Survived FFFFFForth of July – Kidding about the way someone said FFFFFFuck. (What does that mean? Fuck Forth of July?)
Ralph Club – Not throwing up from excessing drinking. I have a sensitive stomach and throw up easily from even spaghetti with sauce.
Never passed out from drinking – I sometimes fall asleep

All that sounds made up to me. It’s “explanations” for people looking for anything to hang onto. Not much of it can be proven either way, so it won’t matter. I suppose the FFFFFFFuck thing he said Squi said could potentially be verified if anyone remembers it.

Availability was never in question or doubt. He’s clearly trying to imply that because “seniors were legal”, it was legal for him to drink.
The truth is, only some seniors were legal—the 18 year olds. Probably half or more were 17, including him.

He used the same talking point in his Fox News interview.

Yup, well aware of that lol Thus my earlier statement saying it was down to marriage for my way in.

I must say, this whole thing is making Kavanaugh look bad, Grassley look worse, and Graham look unhinged. Someone gets involved with Trump in any way and they increase their chances of flaming out. Kavanaugh, Flynn, Cohen, Manafort, should all be an example to Ryan and McConnell.

Neither was I. But the response I wanted to give would have earned me a warning, so there you go!

I wasn’t presenting them as being comparable. That’s something you are saying. I was trying to understand what your standard was for determining if someone was lying while giving you insight into what my standard was.

I also never want to hear WWC MAGAts bitching about ‘liberal elites’ ever again. They’ve taken this entitled Georgetown Prep rich preppy scum, this country club kid, and gotten behind him all the way. Fuck that noise.

Net migration per 1000 inhabitants (2007-2012):
Canada 33.84
United States 15.94

Maybe the problem you’re seeing is that far-right American conservatives may not meet certain immigration criteria.

We’re just talking here. I’m not saying I’m absolutely certain of anything that’s outside of my own experience. But I think it’s pretty clear Kavanaugh was lying about that. What do you think?

Note to Trudeau: No, we are not paying for your fucking wall!

good comment from Dan Rather on twitter:

Democratic officials have long bemoaned that the Supreme Court was not a rallying cry to drive Democratic voters to the polls. It would seem to me that calculus is no longer operative.

It’s just going to melt, anyway.

This type of lawyerly weasling is bothersome when it occurs on the SDMB. It is especially troublesome by a potential Supreme.

He intentionally obscures the drinking age issue, and does not address the issues involved in his regularly drinking (and apparently to excess) when he was a minor. Whether ETOH was readily available, it was unquestionably illegal for him to drink it.

I’m astounded that I have not read/seen more discussing the judicial temperament displayed during his opening tantrum. While people can argue about any number of issues, I question how ANYONE could consider that display “judicial.” And don’t talk to me about the unusual and stressful circumstances. Supremes ought to be able to conduct themselves appropriately in stressful and extreme situations. What he displayed is an individual who has difficulty controlling his emotions, and who suspects some “conspiracy” by Democrats and the Clintons. If he cannot keep those out of his confirmation hearing, why ought we expect he can keep them out of future deliberations?

I’m strongly supportive of the “right” of sitting presidents to nominate to the Fed Cts, and I think Senatorial confirmation should be a relatively low bar. But the nomination of such a political partisan (considering his past experience as well) is quite striking - and not desirable.
