I wonder how many of her neighbors doors have already been knocked on by GOP folks. Not to mention how many google searches they are doing along with other database searches. She’s already taken down her LinkedIn profile.
I don’t understand how this is a problem. It looks a bit like an excuse, like an attempt to discredit her for coming forward, a way of blaming her for being a victim, but a problem, not so much. That she gave details about the event should not seem problematic to anyone who is not doing their best to cast doubt on the event.
If you are just playing devil’s advocate, and pointing out the nature of the smear campaign that will be coming from the right, then you are quite likely right on point. If this is you actually making these accusations that remembering a traumatic event in enough detail to remember the difference between one and any other number is a “problem with her story”, then you are the one doing the smear job.
Do you have any reason to doubt her mental capabilities? That she cannot tell the difference between two entirely different people who are well known to her?
Not sure I follow. That you don’t think she remembers whether she had 1 beer or a different number adds doubt about other details?
If you think that she had a different number than one, then you do think that she is lying, as that is not a hard number to remember, and the only reason for it to be a different number would be that she knows that she didn’t have just one, and is lying about that fact. Sure, if you think that she is a liar, then her whole story is in doubt, and you don’t have to consider her testimony to be credible at all.
But, you say you don’t think that she is a liar, but that she somehow can’t remember the difference between 1 and any other number, that she cannot tell Kavanaugh while he is pressed up against her, on top of her, in her face, even in her mouth, from some other random dude. So, you think she is severely mentally disabled?
Exactly. I have no doubt that she knew that, by going public, her life would be forever altered, and probably for the worse, which is probably why she didn’t go public until now. Between the media circus that’ll surround her for at least the next few weeks, and threats against her by the more unhinged among Trump’s supporters, she’s decided that bringing the truth about what happened to her to light was worth the grief she’ll be getting.
This, alone, is why I think that her allegation needs to be taken seriously. Yes, 35 years have passed, and, yes, memories are not infallible. But, given what such an allegation will be doing to her life, I find it very hard to believe that any sane woman would make such an accusation lightly, or be outright lying about it.
…and her phone numbers published on Twitter. With the hashtag thatlyingbitchchristineblasleyford.
I have no words.
twitter already deleted that page but I guess others will appear
The GOP was hopeful that the Kavanaugh nomination would put pressure on red state Democrats but looks like the pressure is on blue state Republicans.
Memories become less reliable over time. That’s a fact. But who knows? Maybe she kept a diary, and wrote in it “had one beer at a party last night and that creepy Kavanugh kid tried to rape me”. If she did, that would lend more credibility to her memory of the details. There are things that lend more credibility to your memories, and things that make your memories less credible. Two of those latter things are time and alcohol.
I’ll say the same thing about Kavanaugh. It’s possible he did assault her, and if he was as drunk as she claims he was, he might not even remember. Maybe he had a habit of drinking a lot at parties, and might not even remember being at the party in question. I certainly can’t remember every party I went to in high school, and I absolutely don’t remember everything I did when I was drunk at those parties.
If he comes out and says: “Yeah I was at the party, and we were drinking, but I didn’t assault her”, I won’t believe that he remembers things accurately, either.
So, where does that leave us?
It leaves us that we should all be strongly pushing for the Senate to seriously investigate this, and shaming those partisans who are making excuses why they should not.
Memories that are part of trauma that you re-live and re-tell others do not just disappear over time. This is not like remembering how many beers you had at a football game 30 years ago.
Ready to throw him in jail and throw away the key? Not really.
But it could leave us with enough doubt to put the brakes on elevating him to one of the most powerful positions in the world.
The hell? Do you hang out with a bunch of rapists? Do *you *think most men are?
The Bubba analogy is left to the reader.
From a strictly political perspective, this should make it clear how right and how important it was for the Democrats to pressure Al Franken to resign after multiple women made credible allegations against him. Now the distinction between the parties is much more clear than it would have been had Franken stayed in the Senate. Democratic office-holders in the present (unlike the Democrats of past decades) push back against sexual assaulter and abusers (and those who have credible accusations made against them) in their ranks. Republican office-holders in the present tolerate and make excuses for them.
People tend to honestly believe that they remembered details about traumatic experiences. Whether they actually did, is another question.
Ok. But that still refutes his point, which is that this makes her seem dishonest.
She didn’t re-tell the details to others over time. From the article I linked to:
I’m not saying that the memory disappears. I’m saying that memories become less reliable over time and when alcohol is involved.
I did not say she seemed dishonest. I explicitly said I didn’t think she was lying.
This might hurt Kavanaugh among some, who think he’s a failure for only attempting rape and not completing it. They think real men like Donald actually finish what they start along those lines. So he’s a failed rapist- Sad!
Still, the fucking failed rapist is going to be confirmed, but when Chuck Shumer grabs the Majority Leader’s office, he can tell Donald to shove any future nominations right up his fat orange ass.
I didn’t say she recounted the details to others. That isn’t the point at all. The point is that traumatic memories are unlike other episodic memory. Your point here is very weak and not worth pursuing, especially if you believe further investigation is warranted.
That depends on who controls the House. If the GOP does, then Trump can still force recess appointments.
I can’t imagine circumstances where we get rock solid clarity here. What evidence could exist, outside of personal memories? The problems raised by just what we have already heard justifies investigation, if not demands it. Stuff with actual evidence attached to it. But this is going to boil down to nothing more than he said, she said. It can’t be otherwise.
Nothing worse than an intense, bitter, partisan argument where no proof is possible. If they had given those other objections a fair hearing and then voted them gone, they could at least point to that much credibility. But no, that was too hard. And so the situation was total shit, and the shit just caught fire.
It isn’t purely he-said she-said.
You can investigate her claims to have told people about this years ago. You can put Mark Judge under oath. You can search for evidence that she is part of some political cabal. You can give some time for others to come forward. Etc.
