I know this is probably a dumb question, but does anyone know if there is a way that I could become a SDMB moderator? I’m willing to do it for free(that is, if the other moderators are paid). ---

Well, I think with your solid track record displayed on the SDMB, it shouldn’t be a problem for you to get a job with that much power. But, they would probably not hire you since they would be worried that once you heard about a position like President of the US, you would automatically assume you had a clue about how to do it and you might try to go for that one. But hey, aim high. What other jobs could you go for in which you have no demonstrated skill or ability, but they sound cool. Teacher, intellectual, nuclear physicist, envvoy to Luxembourg. All of these and many more are within your grasp. Or, maybe you should just stick to new poster and minor irritant. And, if you have to start a question with “I know this is probably a dumb question”, then rest assured it most certainly will be. * * * My goal - 1000 posts before March 20th. Let’s see, you registered a whole month ago, and you want to be moderator? No. We don’t even know you. You don’t give us any reasons why you would be a good moderator, things like technical skills or previous moderating experience (particularly with the UBBS). But mostly, we don’t know you. We don’t know how you’d handle problems. From what I’ve seen, you’re probably under 18, too. I don’t know if we have an age limit but I bet we do, as we have to handle “adult” material every now and then. Why would you want to be a moderator, anyway? Do you think it gives you special powers? I am LESS free to comment on people and issues, and I have to grit my teeth and leave posts that don’t violate our rules. I get to put up with nonsense simply because I’m a moderator. I just spent two frigging hours this morning, removing multiple posts that occurred because the board was acting strangely. I get IMs and email each and every time the board is down. Most of the time, I have to say “I know it’s down and I have no idea when it will be back up.” I get to get abused by email. I only do this moderating gig because I love The Straight Dope. Oh, and I’m in it for the coffee mugs. We get paid all the coffee mugs we can eat. Lynn Administrator For the Straight Dope ---

Can I run the whole website off of my computer. It’s got a nifty floppy disk drive, and I am gonna install a port for a mouse one of these days.
