I have devloped a theory. It goes like this: [li] **Cecil Adams** having another username would not be a violation of anything. This board is not a democracy; therefore, rules made at a lower level are not binding at a higher level. Thus **Cecil** cannot be considered bound by rules made by **TubaDiva** and **Ed Zotti**.[/li] [li] **Ed** is obviously a real person. I mean, who the hell would call himself **Ed Zotti** if he didn’t legally have to?[/li] [li] **Ed** is obviosly _not_ **Cecil**. Having been stuck with the name **Ed Zotti** in the first place, **Ed** would absolutely not choose a silly name like **Cecil Adams** for an alternate identity. He would have gone for something much more elegant…and since **MysterEcks** was available when I registered, we can therefore take it as a given that **Ed** has no alternate usernames.[/li] [li]BUT… **Cecil Adams** is most likely not the man’s real name. If your last name is Adams, you don’t name your kid Cecil–you go for something elegant like John or Henry. **Cecil Adams**? Preposterous.[/li] [li]Since **Cecil Adams** can’t possibly be **Cecil Adams** , let’s look at his initials–CA. CA is the postal abbreviation for California–this could be a clue that the Perfect Master is actually from GranolaLand rather than from Chicago.[/li] [li]We’ve been wondering why **Cecil** would bother speaking to **SPOOFE**. I mean, would _you_bother speaking to **SPOOFE**?[/li] [li]“Spoofe” can be translated roughly as “fooled ya!”[/li] [li] **SPOOFE** is from California.[/li] [li]Has anybody ever seen **Cecil** and **SPOOFE** together? Of course not.[/li] [li]_THEREFORE_… **Cecil Adams** is **SPOOFE**. Or maybe vice-versa.[/li] See, guys? All it takes is the application of logic and a few beers to determine the truth. ---

WTF, what is this banal expression, “the exception proves the rule.” I don’t know how that originated, but I can’t see any logic in that statement. Can someone explain to me how an exception can prove a rule? ---

Wrong. Not the shortest hijack. I believe Cecil’s initial comments were correct. The “sense 1,” the legal sense is just another way of stating the legal maxim that that which is not excluded is included. “No parking except on Saturday & Sunday” is an examplet of that rule. It is, in no sense, the exception that proves the rule. In the first place, it is not a rule, but a law. In the second place, the legal maxim is as expressed above. ---
