Ummmm… I think every single smartphone sold in the US is manufactured in China.
Not sure what your point is considering what you quoted there. Manufactured in China (even if we assume your statement is correct) is different than Chinese owned company. Apple certainly has their phones assembled in China. But it’s their design, their software and hardware…the Chinese are basically putting it together. Huawei has their own design and software. But what Huawei ALSO has that Apple doesn’t is the fact that, by law, they HAVE to give whatever information and services the CCP ‘requests’…any time they ‘request’ it (Apple of course happily spies on you and everyone who has an Apple phone, but it’s for their own purposes and they don’t have to, nor do they give that info to the US government…whether they give it, ‘voluntarily’ to the CCP is another matter). And, unsurprisingly, the CCP has in fact requested it. Huawei has both hardware and software hacks built into their phones specifically to meet this law for the CCP. That means that, by design, their equipment is pre-hacked by the CCP anytime they want the information. Full stop. This goes for their entire line of products.
It’s kind of why some countries are shying away from allowing Huawei to build their 5G networks. Most people seem ok with this, or don’t really understand the distinction between a US or European or say a South Korean or Japanese phone and something made in China. The real difference is that Chinese law that mandates that Chinese firms HAVE to give any and all information to them (the CCP) if they ‘request’ it. There is no choice. In addition, if the CCP wants you to build in backdoors and other nasty stuff, they, again, have to do it. And, of course, since most Chinese companies are owned by or controlled by members of the CCP in one way or another, it’s not like anyone is really pointing a gun at those companies heads.
With our own companies what you have to worry about is them caving into the CCP like the NBA did. So, in the end, we are probably fucked either way. But at least with an Apple phone there isn’t anything inherently built in the way it is with the chip set and software of a Huawei phone. Cold comfort I’m sure…
