# Can moderators post in lock threads?

Normally, when a moderator locks a thread they post a message saying why it’s locked. My question is, do they lock it first then have the ability to post the reason, or do they post the reason then lock it? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a simulpost with a moderator locking a thread, so I don’t know.
So, do y’all lock first, post later; or post first, then lock it?

I’ve seen a very few times that a mod posts that the thread is being locked and someone gets a post in before the lock is done. They generally lock first, then post the reason as the mods seem able to post to a locked thread.

It depends. Moderators can post in locked threads. I mostly close first, then post the reason after. This is particularly true in cases when there is a time-sensitive reason for closure, such as a fight breaking out. Sometimes, if there is no hurry (as in the case of a duplicate thread) I may post first, then lock.

To further clarify, a mod can post to any locked thread, even after it is locked by another mod. As a matter of etiquette, we do not usually post to a locked thread once another mod has locked it.

Y’all do it in two steps? I use the “close thread after submitting” checkoff on the post announcing that I’m locking. Of course, I’d been a mod for six months before I noticed this option.

I’ve been a mod for just a little longer and _still_ hadn’t noticed it until you posted. Fighting ignorance. Good job.

I have been a mod elsewhere for nearly a year and I didn’t know about this either. Thanks for the pro-tip.
