Can people (or other animals) ever be backwards?

And strangely, the goatee always grows in pointy.

I dimly recall reading of a medical exam question. Patient presents with symptoms of appendicitis but on the wrong side. Doctor is supposed to guess patient may have *situs inversus * !

Exam question, OK.
But in real life, I’d expect that a doctor would do more than ‘guess’.
A simple scan, maybe even an xray would show this. Heck, even just taking their stethoscope and listening for the heartbeat would show this in a few seconds.

The only problem with that is that people with situs solitus (the normal arrangement) can also present with appendicitis in the “wrong” place, even on the rightside of the abdomen as well as the midline or some other nearby locations. It’s not common, but it can and has happened.
