I believe this is where I read about combining ginkgo biloba with creatine and its effects on working memory and raven progressive matrices

> **[Creatine Cognition Meta-analysis](https://gwern.net/creatine)**
>
> Does creatine increase cognitive performance? Maybe for vegetarians but probably not.

skip down to GASTNER ET AL 2007. The original paper is in German.

It claims working memory improved by 2.7 points by combining ginkgo and creatine (vs 0.4 points for placebo, 0.8 points for ginkgo biloba alone and 1.7 points for creatine alone)

Foe Raven’s Progressive Matrices improved by 7.9 points by combining ginkgo and creatine (vs 1.5 points for placebo, 3.1 points for ginkgo biloba alone and 4.6 points for creatine alone)

However the author of that webpage makes the following claim also

> But Gastner et al reported only pre and post-test scores, and not standard deviations; nor was any kind of statistical test reported, making it difficult to infer anything about the results.
>
> It is unclear where this experiment was done, by whom, or whether it was ever published. (The “in press” citation to Mielcarz et al 2007 turns out to refer to McMorris et al 2007.) Nothing in the English translation indicates that it was published anywhere else; searches failed to find anything related to this but the patent itself; the Uchida-Kraepelin test is unusual and I tried searching for anything relating to it and creatine in Google/Google-Scholar in English & German but turned up nothing besides discussions of Watanabe 2002.
>
> On 2013-09-23, I attempted to reach Gastner via the [Alzchem contact form](https://boards.straightdope.com/docs/www/www.alzchem.com/bd0a278d3cdc0b8f0fca1c20872c2b93ea288ce1.html). (Gastner knows English, as demonstrated by co-authoring “Creatine - its chemical synthesis, chemistry, and legal status” in _Creatine and Creatine Kinase in Health and Disease_ .) 3 months later on 2013-12-14, I mailed a physical letter to the Trostberg, Germany address listed in _Creatine and Creatine Kinase_ (“Degussa AG, Dr. Albert-Frank-Straße 32, D-83308 Trostberg, Germany”). As of 2015-01-08, I have received no responses to any of my attempts.

I’m curious what motivated you to create this thread and continue to ask these questions. As the 60-some replies have said, coupled with their many cites to hours of further reading for you, none of human cognition, human “success”, education, intelligence, or IQ is simple or clear cut. And opinions, even expert opinions, on any of these topics are not unanimous.

You sound to me as though you have a preconceived notion that you want us to validate for you. That can’t happen. I’m not suggesting you’re doing something bad here; just that _if_ that is your goal, it’s doomed to failure.

We collectively try to be helpful and polite (usually) even if we’re disagreeing with someone. _Please_ throw us a bone here and tell us what you’ve learned from all this and what you’re thinking now. Not just the questions you still have, but the questions that have been settled in your mind.

If you have had an extremely high IQ since childhood and academics were a breeze, you may not develop any work ethic.

[Matarazzo and Goldstein (1972)](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0887617704000769#BIB15) also examined the I.Q. of the average medical student to determine whether, then, present claims that there was a “decline in the intellectual caliber of the entering medical student” (p. 102) was correct. Those authors found, contrary to the alleged contention, that their sample of medical students performed similar to that of 10 other samples of medical student I.Q.’s from 1946 to 1967. The average Full Scale I.Q. of the medical students across the number of studies was 125, similar to the I.Q.’s of physicians at that time.

Excellent post, and I agree with the 125 IQ being a likely mid-range score for a physician.

The author of the premier IQ test used today, David Wechsler, stated that the utility of the IQ score is limited, and that “non-intellective” factors come strongly into play in the direction and success of one’s educational and occupational goals.

I’m seem to be getting confused of IQ vs intelligent vs stupid people.

So I read that people may say this person did some thing stupid like robbed a bank a block away from police station or worse across from the police station. Or person has small drugs and go on long car chase or foot chase and now the jail time is way more than simple offence.

Or a tornado or hurricane comes but you do not leave you stay there to shoot anyone that may burglarize your house. You think you are superman that nothing will happen to you or you do not understand the danger.

Or some one drives and cuts you off and you get out and start a fight or pull gun because you cannot see the cause and effect that you may get sent to jail.

Or you do shoplift and fight with police and now you offence is way more than simple shoplift.

Or you have business but you do not spend any money on a fire alarm because you feel amazed seeing those billions dollars coming in.

Or you really love to open carry and think you can walk in say a mall and nothing can happen and some how there is magic that in shoot out with mad guy in the mall that the police by magic some how will know you the good guy not the bad guy.

Or you are running a business but you do not save any money for an emergency because your brain cannot understand there may be emergency and you should do that.

Or you like hiking but like taking pictures of you self close to edge but you get way to close and could fall.

When it comes to safety or crime your brain cannot understand danger or cause and effect because of IQ.

Some of those may correlate with IQ, which in the end is just a measure of ability to score high on an IQ test, but for all of them there are lots of factors involved. That’s the nature of human psychology, everything is a complicated mess and there are no easy solutions.

Human cognition is full of flaws and biases, and having high IQ doesn’t exempt people from that. Smart people may be able to compensate for their flaws and biases, but not perfectly, and several very smart people have had well known trips into stupid land. E.g. Linus Pauling, two times Nobel Prize winner, who became convinced the vitamin C was a miracle drug and kept insisting it was and putting his money into more research while the evidence against kept piling on.

When we say that someone did a stupid act, we often don’t imply that they are therefore stupid (i.e., low in I.Q.). We sometimes mean that this act will (as most people know, regardless of I.Q.) get them hurt or cause them to lose a lot of money or get other people to hate them or some other thing that is bad for them in the long term. Many of the people who do stupid acts might even be above average intelligence. What causes some people to do a stupid act might be that they have mental problems that cause them to do things without taking the time to think them through (even though they are smart enough to realize with a little thought that those things are a bad idea). Other people do stupid acts because they grew up in a family or a society where people were expected to do certain acts, although a smart person would realize that they were stupid acts if they thought them carefully through.

> I’m seem to be getting confused of IQ vs intelligent vs stupid people.

I’ll repeat some advice I gave earlier in this thread: you should stop focusing specifically on IQ, and on the importance of “improving IQ.”

As nearly everyone who’s participated in this thread has noted, IQ doesn’t mean or measure what most people think it does, and someone’s IQ score (as a measurement, derived from a test) is, at best, only meaningful, applicable and useful in a small range of circumstances.

If I can paraphrase, it seems, based on your thread, that what you would really like to figure out how to address are:

- How can we help people (particularly children) achieve better in school?
- How can we help people escape the cycle of poverty, and get good-paying jobs?
- How can we help people (even ostensibly smart people) build better understanding of risk and cause-and-effect of their actions, and better decision-making skills?

Those are all worthy questions, and several of us (myself included) have discussed ways of addressing some of these issues in your thread. But, again, all of these are only tangentially related, at most, to someone’s IQ score, which you keep coming back to as being what must be addressed in order to fix these issues.

That is what I’m getting confused on because liberals say stupid and dumb does not have any thing to do with IQ well conservative say it does.

Well because some stuff I was reading say in old days doing the eugenics program the US government and science took this and IQ serious. But Hitler took this and changed it and turn this into race thing and done all those things that now scientist are afraid to go here and so are watering down IQ today and want to wash their hands clean of the dirty world of eugenics program.

Well I don’t know of any textbooks to read on IQ that can explain this and bits of information I read here and there.

This isn’t a Liberal vs Conservative thing. Or if it is, it’s significantly more nuanced that you are implying. You are essentially ignoring the fact that words have different meanings in different contexts. Everyone does stupid things from time to time, and it has nothing to do with inherent intellect.

Eugenics was inspired by a number of different things, but it was never a purely scientific process. It was always motivated by bias, prejudice, and power. But it really has little to do with the discussion about what intelligence means or how to measure it.

It was always a “racial” thing, though at times the “race” were Italians or Irish. And look up regression to the mean. Only allowing “smart” people to breed won’t eliminate dumb people, and preventing dumb people from breeding will stop many smart people from being born.

Well in the past from what I read the US government and people thought crime and mental illness was caused by offsprings of the parents with low IQ or genetics would always bread low IQ or bad people.

They well sterilization of inmates and mental hospital inmates so they don’t bread as all the offsprings where are dictated by the parents.

And parents with low IQ will always lead to offsprings of low IQ. So the theory was crime was caused by low IQ.

After WW2 college and university stared to push sociology theory of culture than IQ or genetics of fear sounding harsh to people.

So nature vs nurture seems to play out with liberal vs conservative and US policy makers. Well in college and university today they are very careful going here today.

In Mississippi if you a kid well who you are is going to be who you going to become and government does not believe giving money to you because you failed a grade or two will help you by taking it over again or rehabilitation can help inmates

The US government in liberal areas believe taking class over two or three times if needed to pass and will support money and hand outs to help you or inmates can be helped.

And liberals push crime is caused by poverty or culture not IQ or genetics.

The only way to end the debate among nature vs nature.

-show people above IQ of say 100 doing crime.
-show people having high IQ having mental problems
-show people high IQ above 100 doing stupid things got them in jail, car accident, lost job, bankruptcy, lost house and hardship in life

- show government and rich people with high IQ above 100 doing stupid or terrible things.

Show me Trump and people similar to him with IQ above 100 or guy in Mexico or Brazil doing Covid shaking people hands and saying nothing more than cold and sniffers now go to work. The horrible leader of Brazil and Mexico that all got Covid them self.

So me leader of the UK who got Covid than second time almost got it again because some one close to him had it and he had to stay home for 14 days.Well he could not even learn from his first mistake.

Show me leaders IQ above 100 start silly wars knowing they cannot win and other stupid leaders and businesses people

So me business going for bankruptcy or asking for bail out money because of doing stupid things and do they have IQ above 100?

So me doctors with high IQ doing stupid things or police officers.

Well because if it IQ is true it would change the world that to set up say a business, be a police officers , be in government or leader you need a IQ above 100.

That people with IQ below 100 are too kid like and stupid. And will mess up any job they get or do stupid things.

I don’t know of any college or university that have done study into this and show if you have a IQ below 100 you are too dangerous and stupid to run a business and your business will be asking the government for bailout money or go for bankruptcy . And if you have IQ below 100 you are way too dangerous and stupid to be a leader.

And person with IQ below 100 may start silly stupid war.

I don’t know of any study showing this. Or many people with high IQ above 100 starting silly stupid wars or running economy bad because you cannot understand cause and effect.

The Dark History (and Reality) of Eugenics in America and the Forced Sterilization of Women

And this.

There is a very strong coorelation between low I.Q. and criminality. I worked in a prison as a graduate student. All the inmates had Institutional files with psych testing. Not one of the inmates I saw had a I.Q. of 100. Most were in the 80’s to low 90’s. Roughly the 15%-25% percentile.

Some stuff I read on Wikipedia and Quora. And conservative message boards what the conservative are saying.

They seem to think criminals have a low IQ on the conservative message boards.

Well I just did a search now.

> President Donals Trumps is runing for election to the 46th President of the United States. So he was the most powerful US president from the previous. Even "what is president trump's IQ" Also makes the newspaper spend a lot of ink. The interesting...

_President-elect Donald Trump is currently the most polarizing figure on earth. Despite his masses of riches and possessions, he is not thought to be a smart man because of his outlandish statements. However, his IQ of 156 classifies him as a genius._

But that if you really believe it as he can say any thing or the US department of government could say any thing.

So with out some pressure testing to see what his IQ is you cannot believe what he is saying or some government body say that I have some paper on his IQ.

But that see what some other politician like Trump and businesses people and other people IQ have to show.

OP is obsessed about IQ as “the answer,” despite what numerous participants in this thread have told her. I’m done trying.
