Appropos of this comment and subsequent discussion, I happened to notice this at 538.com: Why Democrats And Republicans Did A Sudden 180 On The FBI
Interesting, but relies a bit too heavily on stereotypes of how Democrats and Republicans should feel about law enforcement.
But, what about transparancy with the American people? Is that all of a sudden not important anymore? Why do all of the conservative arguments in favor of the original memo being released not also apply for this memo?
I’m vaguely curious if someone will leak the rebuttal in expectation of a pardon from the next Democratic president.
Any old rationalization in a storm; whatever the base will buy, which is pretty much anything they say.
Someone else brought this up, I don’t remember who, but what prevents them from pulling a Mike Gravel and reading it into the record like he did with the pentagon papers?
As he been pointed out in several articles linked in this thread, all sides have something to lose if release of damaging intelligence spoils the trust between the Intelligence Committees and the Intelligende Community.
But if a congressman or senator reads the memo into the Congressional Record, maybe they would be subject to some punishment from their house of Congress, but they can’t be arrested for leaking.
It’s worth remembering that the Democratic rebuttal memo has already been scrubbed by both the FBI and the Justice Department to ensure no damaging intelligence will be released. Unlike the GOP memo. So any redactions made by the White House will be purely political.
That isn’t accurate according to this:
This says the FBI and DOJ asked for redactions.
Paragraph 3. Schiff said publicly and repeatedly over the past week that the Democratic memo would not be released until the FBI and DOJ had a chance to redact.
ETA: So I suppose it would be more accurate to say the memo “would be” redacted before release rather than “has been.” I guess FBI and DOJ were never even given the chance to do it.
Yes, my nitpick was about any redactions would be solely because of the White House. I think we’re on the same page now.
I just wanted to make it clear that no classified information would be released because the Dems released it. Trump implies that it would, and (as usual), that’s a lie.
I read back a little in the thread and I didn’t see where the point had been made. Apologies if it has.
Republican Congressman Justin Amash just tweeted, “Both the Republican and Democratic #FISA memos should be released. I’ve read both memos. Neither one endangers national security. The American people deserve the opportunity to read both memos.”
Geez…even AMASH is doing the truth and justice thing now. Trump makes strange bedfellows…
I’m old enough to remember when they said this ‘explosive’ memo was going to end the Mueller investigation.
This “they” of whom you speak… I rise to “Huh?”.
That…is certainly an article about a thing.
Looks like the Schiff memo has been released. (PDF)
