# Can someone explain this gag from "The Onion" to me? (Hockey)

I’m usually a big fan of The Onion, but I don’t get this lst of hockey players to watch. The last one is the only amusing item on the list.
What am I missing?

the are not or were never hockey players, and hence the joke. Nobody watches Hockey so nobody would know who they are anyway.

With the exception of Teemu Selanne. I don’t watch hockey either, but you can’t watch SportsCenter without hearing his name said from time to time. :rolleyes: 😉

I believe those are all characters from “The Mighty Ducks” movie franchise … yes, a quick check of [IMDB](http://imdb.com/title/tt0104868/) confirms this.
Except Teemu Selanne … he’s a [real dude](http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=500).

Just that the items get increasingly silly, but the piece is played very close to the vest. The [NBA piece](http://www.theonion.com/content/node/55038) is funnier, and the jokes are more obvious.
There is one real player on that list: Teemu Selanne, who’s having a good year.

…who changed their name to the Anaheim Ducks after being sold by Disney.
Incidentally, they are utterly dominating the NHL right now. We could be looking at one of the greatest teams in modern sports history.

A hockey team consisting of nobodies that people thought would amount to nothing bands together and becomes a professional powerhouse to be reckoned with? I think there was a movie like that, but I can’t remember the name of it.

Disney had tried to sell the Ducks for quite a while. They went up for sale around the same time the Angels did (2002).
