Can someone explain to me this FIFA thingy?

Is there a video of John Oliver doing the Happy Dance yet?

And Blatter will be the president until the new election, which may be expected sometime early in 2016.

…“Since I shall not be a candidate, and am therefore now free from the constraints that elections inevitably impose, I shall be able to focus on driving far-reaching, fundamental reforms that transcend our previous efforts,” Blatter said.

To follow on doorhinge’s post, the new elections apparently will happen at some point between December and March:

Plenty of campaigning time.

I want to see him choking down a Bud lime. The sponsors may have had nothing to do with it but hopefully Oliver says ‘Fuck it, Blatter went’ and drinks one anyway.

They just had an election, right? All the campaigning, all the prep work, is already done, it’s just a few days old.

When I saw the headline that Blatter resigned my first thought was that something in the FIFA bylaws[sup]*[/sup] must grant him a higher pension if he was elected to a fifth term, even if he only served a day of it.

  • I originally typed that as “buylaws”; Freudian slip.

I think it’s safe to assume that most of the best potential candidates never campaigned at all.

This new election looks like it’ll have at least 8-10 people running, so there is a lot of campaigning yet to do.

Why didn’t they? Or perhaps a better question is how will they explain why they didn’t? Seems to me that replacement candidates will come from somewhere within the football (soccer) power structure. If you let Blatter do things his way for years without opposing him, it’s gonna be a tough sell now to convince me you’re not just like him.

No one thought anyone was going to beat Blatter due to Blatter already getting the support of CAF and AFC. Refusing to run because you were going to obviously lose will be held against absolutely no one.

Really? I’d put a lot more faith in a leader who stood up and opposed Blatter (even if if was futile) when it could have mattered than in someone who was utterly spineless for the last 16 years.

What can I say, the rest of the world doesn’t put as much stock in futile gestures?

Well, he is passing the Champagne!

(Bud Limes for all)

My understanding is that Prince Ali was the agreed upon “anti-Blatter” candidate and that no one else ran so as not to dilute the vote. Take of that what you will.
