ESPN notes that today is the day Mike Schmidt retired mid season. He was one of the highest paid players in the game, but he wasn’t playing up to his standards anymore, so he walked away from it.
Can someone explain to me this weeks MLB financial proposal to the players to play baseball in 2020?
The MLBPA is asking the owners to substantiate their claims:
MLBPA demanding financial records from MLB in talks to resume season
Well, it looks like baseball is dead for this season. MLB rejected the players proposal and has declined to counter their proposal.
It’s been obvious for years that a strike was coming so I’m not totally shocked that COVID-19 will be the impetus for the strike to hit early. I doubt there will be a season next year either.
If there is no season this year (or next), there are some municipalities that are going to be royally pissed off. Arlington, TX just built a brand new domed stadium for the Rangers; I can’t fathom that they can stand having it sit empty for two years (at least, without baseball games).
On a happier :dubious: note, today is the 46th anniversary of Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland, when the Indians had to forfeit a game to the Rangers due to a drunken fan riot. As Wikipedia notes:
The rioting continued for 20 minutes. As Joe Tait and Herb Score called the riot live on radio, Score mentioned the security guards’ inability to handle the crowd. Tait said, “Aw, this is absolute tragedy”.
*it probably was a bad idea to allow each fan to buy six beers at a time.
While I could care less about the money issues, how close are we to a drop dead date to have baseball resume on July 4? I’m thinking Sunday.
I’m surprised we aren’t past it already. Pitchers need awhile to get ready.
Claudell Washington died. He was only 65. He’s not much remembered anymore but he was a good player who made the All Star team in both leagues, won a World Series, and played for a long time.
He’s remembered by people like me who thinks watched endless Atlanta Braves games on WTBS. Amazing to think how many games of those awful 1980s Braves games got watched because of cable.
