Can there be a practical use for lightning?

Timing is tough to predict, but obviously things like lightening rods on tall buildings are pretty predictable and consistent targets. Having said that, I think storing the charge creates additional issues. For example, the most innovative means of storing excess electricity involves pushing water uphill.
