Can we hope to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation while we still allow Male GM (circumcision)

Seriously, dude, you’re talking about cutting skin off a penis and you aren’t sure it’s painful? Of course it’s painful! No “probably” about it.

Yes, anesthesia can be used, but I’ve yet to meet a man who said that an injured penis wasn’t sore and painful until it healed. We’re not talking about a paper cut here, we’re talking about taking a layer of skin off.

It’s not the worst possible thing that could happen, or the most painful thing ever, but yeah, I don’t even own a penis but I’m pretty sure it’s a painful procedure.

If you look up dog ear croping and tail docking in Wikipedia you will see that this is done mainly for cosmetic reasons on certain show breeds and that it is increasingly illegal. Or else it must be done by a vet with anaesthetic and medical follow-up.

The concept of animal rights is very new. After reading the article in Wiki I am not certain it is done on newborn animals.I suppose you can now crow that the quote about “no other mammal” is not 100% true, only 99.999999% true. I guess it’s true what they say about small things.

It just occurred to me that my ass-crack is the part of me that I most struggle to keep clean. I have a high-fibre diet which causes stools to smear even with lots of toilet paper. Bacteria and sweat often lead to itching and cracked skin back there. I sometimes use alcohol hand sanitizer to stop infection. Burns like hell but it works until the itching and broken skin reappear.

All this while, the solution has been right before me. All I need to do is have my ass sewn shut and have a colostomy bag put in. No more disgusting crap coming out my back door, no more disgusting skid marks in my underwear. The whole area would be clean and sweet-smelling.

And if I said God told me to do it, I could demand that you show respect for my religious beliefs and not criticise me.

It is painful for a while, in fact, not just during the circumcision.

And yes it reduces sensitivity.

And yes, I know of what I speak.

“Right behind you,” perhaps?

And…if the procedure were perfected…why not? If the seal was tight, the engagement and disengagement valves leak-proof, everything safe from infection, and if there were no follow-on risks (would cessation of the use of the rectum for elimination lead to an increased cancer risk?) then – well, why not? Spare us from having to sit and grunt.

You may have envisioned the future!

Well thank you for sharing, that was something I was just dying to know. (Where’s that vomitting smiley when you need it)

Why wouldn’t they be able to criticise you?

You have never noticed how religion gets a free pass in our society? If I think Jesus walking on water or Mohammed flying to Heaven on a winged horse is nonsense that no reasonable person would believe, I will be considered bigotted for saying so.

Read (or watch a youtube featuring) Sam Harris. He will tell you all you need to know about religion’s unfair immunity from criticism.

Actually, well, yes and no. After all, there are thousands of religions, most of which contradict the others. Christians don’t get called “bigots” just because they believe God had a son, any more than Jews get called “bigots” just because they don’t believe God had a son.

Religious criticism is totally fair. Bigotry really only starts to be an issue when criticism is mean-spirited and dismissive. (“Those ignorant pagans…”)

So, yes, the phrase “…nonsense that no reasonable person would believe” is kinda nasty. But if you’d just rephrase it to “personal faith-based beliefs that are not open to evidence-based verification” you’re playing fair.

You’re welcome. And in case you find the vomitting smiley and want to put him through a real workout, the subject of this thread is the barbaric outrage of circumcision. So if you want to see if you can hurl across the room I can refer you to a Youtube video of a real circumcision. It is not workplace safe information, so I will not give you the exact URL. Go to youtube and type in Birth As We Know It: Circumcision.

Be sure to have the sound on so you can hear the baby screaming in sheer terror.

It is late and I am too tired to try to teach you the obvious. I recommend you read Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris about the free ride religion enjoys in our society.

It’s already been posted. Post 22.

I suggest you find a video of a female genital mutilation and tell us which is worse.

So we Jews are compassionate advocates of human rights who also visit “horrors” upon our children.

Gotcha.

My baby barely flinched. Nursed for a bit afterwards and then took a nap.

I’ve read stuff by Dawkins and Harris; they both seem to lob criticism around, much like how plenty of folks in general – and yours truly in particular – seem to.

Perhaps it is your own understanding of the obvious that is at fault. Religion gets criticized all the time; there aren’t any anti-blasphemy laws here. I agreed with you that truly bigoted criticism will be called out. But if you think that voicing a difference of opinion on a religious item is, itself, going to get you condemned for bigotry, you know nothing about the real world.

Catholics and Protestants, Christians and Jews, Christians and Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus, all criticize each other all the time, and aren’t called bigots because of it.

This is a warning for personal insults. If you feel you must, the BBQ Pit is right around the corner.

You know, I had been under the impression that he had been banned.

Just to throw some more gasoline on the fire, I’m going to take a moment to talk about my dick

Speaking as someone who was never circumcised, I can personally attest to the fact that foreskin is highly sensitive, it feels good, and never caused me any issues. Baring medical necessity, I can’t really think of a good reason to lob it off. Maybe even wait until the child is old enough to decide for themselves; In Turkey for instance, boys typically get the procedure done around 8 or 9 (though I doubt they have much choice in the matter).

A purely anecdotal trend I noticed growing up was the conspicuous prescience of hand lotion on some of my mates bedside tables. Being ignorant, it always stuck me as odd that my friends, who were your typical male teenagers, would care so much about having soft hands. When I found out what it was actually for, I couldn’t help but wonder why anyone would need it. After a bit of awkward polling, it seemed like none of my uncut friends needed hand lotion either. Someone feel free to contradict me if this runs counter to your own experience.

I’m not going to bring up FGM or religion, because oh boy is that a can of worms.

You don’t got me, because yes indeed, that is exactly what I am saying. I am not saying Jews are the only ones who circumcise. But yes, I think Judaism has a long history of concern for human rights. The IDF has a long demonstrated that it cares about human rights and human dignity,no matter what Arab propaganda may say. Jews gave generously to the NAACP and the Civil Rights Movement in the US. They have been wiling to set aside commandments from G*d such as stoning to death a girl who is not a virgin on her wedding night, or killing a neighbour who works on the sabbath (all comanded in Leviticus) and willling to evolve with new values in their society. If I were not an atheist I would convert to Judaism in a flash.

This is why their continued use of circumcision is a disgrace to the noblest traditions of Judaism. So yes, I very much believe that “(You) Jews are compassionate advocates of human rights who also visit “horrors” upon (your) children.”

No need for Jews to feel singled out by my opinions. Many, many nations demonstrate this kind of ironic conradiction. Hispanic culture is full of wonderful people, and yet the national sport is torturing and killing a bull to amuse spectators. The same Muslims and Africans who mutilate their females also love them and want what is best for them. The Brits took over a quarter of the Earth by military force, and during WWII threw people like Gandhi in jail, but Vera Lynn could still sing about the Empire : Freedom remains (???)

The US is the most religious country in the western world AND the biggest exporter of pornography.

The list goes on and on.
