> If the “economic warfare” just weakens a belligerent nation, but they remain belligerent, what’s the point? Is Putin likely to “give up” on wanting to keep a part of Russia that historically belonged to Russia, and the only year-round seaport in his entire nation just because his country is suffering due to sanctions?

Putin’s not going to give a crap about his country suffering. However if his rich cronies and their companies start going bankrupt due to the decline in the ruble and their inability to get foreign loans, there might be some pressure applied.

It is not done yet, but clearly the progress, such as it is, in negotiations with Iran is somewhat due to the sanctions.
