OK, I know the factual answers (except that Vietnam one, it’s fuzzy), so take my word for it. What I want to know is, have you asked strangers in the street? I know Jay Leno does this, but obviously he cherrypicks for laughs. I just read “The Dumbest Generation,” so I do know that it’s pretty abysmal, but I would be interested to see the results of a street poll done by you/your class.
Here’s my confession: I graduated from Berkeley. I would not have known some of those questions at that time. You think we covered the New Deal and Vietnam or Nixon in high school? (My JC American History class was taught by a cuckoo clock who refused to discuss anything after 1789, on the grounds that the Constitution was a crime.) Almost everything I know about American history is what I’ve picked up on my own. Maybe if we had some halfway decent history/civics instruction in schools, strangers in the street would know a bit more of this stuff…
Yeah, of course, there were charges of corruption so the best thing to do was to impeach so they could investigate the charges.
Too general, I’m guessing the answer you’re looking for is “lost,” I’ll raise you one and say “popularly acknowledged a loss.” Our other two “losses” that I can recall offhand (1812 and Korea) were sort of talked around.
Dropping nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (though “ordered” would probably be a better choice of words here).
An arbitrarily large number dictated by Congress, currently 9.
Still a little subjective. Living? (dodges rotten fruit) Okay, okay, Bay of Pigs?
Two. Or at leas that’s what they WANT you to think!

Small/limited/make your own synonym
USSR
The name given to legislation pushed by FDR to help combat the Great Depression (mainly through curbing unemployment).
I wouldn’t say the dropping of the bombs ended world war 2, exactly. It ended the Pacific arm of the war, but the war against Germany was already concluded. It’s giving Truman and the bomb a little too much credit to state that this act ended the whole war.
The rest of the questions I won’t answer, since I’m not exactly representative of a typical US citizen, what with not being one. What are you going to use the answers for?
Nobody has commented on the First to put the war on television response to Vietnam. That was the one I was thinking of. All my answers were already given.
