Can you hear this sound? A poll/test.

Yep, heard the whine. Almost exactly the same annoying pitch my monitor at work makes, too.

25, and I have to say, I’m pretty surprised. I thought all those ear infections and heavy metal concerts had ruined my hearing.

(That was a cruel trick to pull on my unsuspecting innocent ears. )

Yay! There are other people on the planet who will admit to hearing this noise! People my own age laughed at me back in high school when I said I could hear TVs that were on but not tuned to a channel. When I hear it for an extended length of time, I’ll drop whatever I’m doing to find the offending TV. I can’t stand it.

So…yes, I heard the noise in the sound file; a very high-pitched pulse that didn’t seem to decrease when I adjusted the volume. I had the volume at the normal level at first; the sound was almost nauseating. I’m 23.

I heard a hissing sound, not particularly high, but I felt my ears pulling back as if of their own violation.

I’m 38 with some hearing loss, so I’m not surprised

Sounds like my TV. Not painful, but loud enough to be annoying.

Sound Forge tells me the frequency is about 16 kHz, with amplitude pulses occurring exactly twice per second. There’s a smaller pulse approx. 170 ms after each main pulse, but I’m guessing it’s an echo and not part of the original signal.

Will this keep the mosquitos away as well as the kids?

I’m 28.

I hear it. In fact that’s about all I hear. I couldn’t make sense of anything in the background at ALL. I didn’t get headphones, just played it out of my crappy speakers whilst sitting next to my loud computer.

It’s the same sound (repeated over and over) that my TV makes when it’s turning on. It takes like 5 seconds for it to come on when I hit the POWER button on the remote. Sometimes I’ll re-hit the button and it comes on then goes off. Sounds just like that.

I’m 27 and have some pretty bad tinitus and am currently working my way out from underneath an inner-ear infection.

I consciously heard the pulse on the third listen; by then my ears really hurt. I think it’s much more painful than TV power or mute noises.

I’m 21.

I hear a repeated swishing sound, like someone walking in nylon pants. But I don’t know if that’s the sound. If that is the sound in question, I don’t find it annoying, but then I’m not usually bothered by repetitive or high-pitched noises.

I’m 25.

ouch! I heard it immediately, before I could even make out any crowd noise…

and I’m 15.

(and using speakers instead of headphones.)

I can’t hear it. I hear voices and maybe some traffic noise, and a clanking sound. Too many years playing rock and roll and going to concerts, I guess. I’m 52.

I can’t hear it, either, even with the sound turned all the way up. I knew my hearing sucked, but Jesus. Maybe I’ll actually stop listening to my music so loudly now, it can’t be helping anything…

Oh, and I’m 18. Nobody’s going to keep me from hanging out where I’m not wanted!

Ok, I found something interesting. Well, at least to me. I followed a link and decided to see if I could hear the ringtone that uses just the annoying high-pitched sound. When I first started playing it, I made out a high-pitched, ringing-in-the-ears type noise, but it seemed to stop after a second or so. Then I paused it, and once I resumed playing it, I could hear the sound again. Repeat. So apparently I can hear it, faintly, but adjust to it pretty quickly. It would be cool to see if those of you who said you also couldn’t hear the sound experience the same thing.

After repeated listenings I can hear something…it’s kind of an oscillating whisper. I don’t hear anything remarkable, but that could easily be crappy laptop speakers/headphones.

I’m 23 with a lot of hearing damage and a reconstructed ear.

Couldn’t hear it, but I know the max freq I can hear is around 13.5kHz so I’m not too surprised.

24, Female.

I can hear it well enough for it to be painful. My ears still feel funny. 21, male.

On further listening I can discern the noise with my left ear. It’s still very faint.

Now THAT I can definitely hear. It’s strange, because it doesn’t bother me while it’s playing, but once it shuts off, I feel relieved. Like someone’s taken a weight off me, but I was unaware that the weight was there in the first place.

Can’t hear it. 40.

With the volume fairly low on my crappy laptop speakers, I heard it instantly (pretty much above the crowd noise). I only listened to about half the linked file because it was like nails on a chalkboard only a thousand times worse.

I’m 19.
