Canada's Governor General skins seal and eats heart

I’ve never had the heart, but seal is tasty meat.

I think there’d be a market for it, if it weren’t for the ‘oh, the cute little white, fuzzy babies’ nonsense.

My respect for her definitely increased, and I liked her before.

She’s definitely awesome.
Can you picture Adrienne Clarkson doing the same? Yeah, didn’t think so.

Only if it was served up by a fancy chef in a $500 a plate restaurant as some sort of exotic sushi (on the good old GG expense account).

Agreed. And besides, HM has spent a good part of the last fifty-some years travelling the world and visiting the people in her various realms and territories. Even if she’s never actually eaten seal heart herself, I’m sure she’s seen some interesting meals and customs.

Doesn’t seem to hurt the market for lamb chops…

I’d eat one myself, but I haven’t the heart to try it.

I’ll bet y’all won’t be so happy about this when your Governor General starts eating nothing but raw fish and balancing a ball on her nose.

:stuck_out_tongue:

I never heard of her til now, but she has my respect. Here, among your southern neighbors, most politicians will do no more with our Native brothers than talk about them from a distance. Your GuvGen has some big brass ovaries, and a big heart of her own.

As a news site commenter said, “You are what you eat – she’s all heart!”

She really should have found some way to work in some line like "Thus we shall feast upon the hearts of our enemies !"

But if she has her head back, she’s effectively thrusting . . . I heartily support this initiative.

Was the heart still beating? 'Cuz that would have been impressive.

And she’ll start playing that… what do the call the thing, it’s a row of little one note horns on stand, and you play it by moving from one horn to the next.

Hmm. I can find a picture but not a name.

Of course technically Governors General are not politicians. They are appointed by the Prime Minister, but are meant to be above politics.

Which is why they can take the time to do things like hunt and eat food with Natives. Politicians here usually don’t do it either. The GG’s role is (in theory) to represent all Canadians and celebrate their culture.

I liked that she did this when I first read it.

So, it looks like they served seal at the commissary on Parliament Hill today. I watched the news story; of course they had some nutjob from PETA talking about how it was a stain on Canada’s reputation or some other happy horseshit, which prompted me to do some research on the seal hunt here. Yeah, just as I suspected (and as others have said so eloquently in this thread) - it is highly-regulated and monitored, and used to cull the population so the seals don’t overgrow their habitat. I guess knee-jerk reactionaries aren’t too interested in doing research when they’ve got high horses to get on.

And up until now I had always thought PETA was a top-notch research agency…
