Okay, so I just registered my number online. There seemed to be absolutely no confirmation that the number was actually mine to register - so I could if I wanted sign up all of Saskatoon? Be a bit tedious, granted, but still, seems odd to me.

More than a million consumers had called one of two phone lines to try to register by early afternoon. At one point more than 40,000 callers were trying get through “at the same instant,” Carmel said. An unknown additional number tried to sign up online at the registry’s web site.

Just over 200,000 consumers had succeeded in getting on the list by 1.30 p.m., Carmel said. Most of them had signed up by 9 a.m., when the system became overwhelmed. Only a few thousand were able to get through after that, he said.

I’ll put our names on the list, too, but I am seriously put out by the exceptions, since those are by far our most common telemarketers. Telus calls me almost every day; they don’t leave a message, and when I pick up, there’s nobody there (even if I wait). I’m not sure what the point of that telemarketing is; if it is to annoy me, it is extremely effective. I’ve started just picking up and hanging up immediately.

The newspaper thing pisses me off, too, but even if it only cuts the calls in half I’ll be happy with it.

Why are they exempt, I wonder? I get a shitload of calls from the Calgary Herald that all piss me right off.

I believe you can still demand that a specific company or organization add you to their own DNC list, you just can’t do it globally through the national DNC registry.
