One: Trudeau sucks.
Two: We will use magic to make pipeline problems disappear.
Three: We can do anything the Liberals do for way less money.
Four: Trudeau sucks.
Cinq: Les signes religieux sont mal, sauf le croix.
Jumping to the right of MacKay is what, likely, secured O’Toole’s victory as he was only able to surpass MacKay by collecting the 2nd/3rd place votes of the other two contenders after they dropped out (one who represented the Christian Conservative wing, and the other representing the nutbar faction ).
I agree - they’re a mis-mash of ideology and aspirations complete free from the messy world of actually governing. I feel they do however give you a sense of the weights they give to each issue and the framing they feel is needed for their audience.
Honestly one of the nicest bits recently is just the pragmatism shown by Ford towards the Federal Liberals. It sucks some of the oxygen out of the “leftists!” screaming points.
I’m pretty shocked by the job Ford has done. I’m moving to Ontario pretty soon (delayed because of COVID), and I’d seriously consider voting for him at the next provincial election. It also feels like the person he was during the election was an act. He seems like a completely different person to me.
To be fair, Doug Ford mostly abandoned his campaign promise of huge budget cuts pretty early, even before Covid-19 made it unfeasible. I guess there was the amalgamation of public health units.
Before Covid, Ford was quite unpopular because he picked fights with unions and a francophone university, had significant corruption in his administration with a few moderate scandals, familial lawsuits, a loudmouth reputation, was an unashamed populist (Buck a beer!), did not resolve TTC and waterfront problems…
Yet I worked with people from his riding who loved the man deeply. Many of these people were black women - his support comes from many different groups, some surprising. They loved his sense of humour, his yearly FordFest, the fact they could call his office and complaints would.actually be heard and often resolved.
It was difficult to resolve these two sides of the man. Covid showed a more human side. Taking advice, deeply worried about his own family in nursing homes, honestly discussing his hopes and fears. Being transparent, present, human and showing real leadership. It made me like the man much more. I saw some of what his supporters did, perhaps. But that doesn’t fully solve all the above problems. His cooperation with the federal Liberals might solve some of them.
I’m very tired of prorogued parliaments, omnibus bills and these many other cheesy manipulations that government know are essentially undemocratic, decry in others and have falsely pledged to avoid.
Canadians should start a write in campaign to the GGeneral and point out they have the power to deny, and that they should be looking out for Canadians instead of protecting their cushy job. Tell them Canadians expect them to grow a freaking spine and just say NO, enough!
Of course it should be coupled with a similar letter campaign to the Queen. She may or may not have the power to instruct the GG. But she def has influence. I think we could make a case, we’ve been good partners with England, and she should apply a little pressure on our behalf!
