I suspect the new Speaker will have new staff.

Hoping there won’t be a retaliation on Canada’s part by just handing back all 62 diplomats.

I suspect not, or we would have heard of it by now. And no other country has backed up Canada here, so we’re not showing hidden evidence to allies.

I think Trudeau got over his skis and jumped the gun with an allegation he couldn’t prove conclusively.

I know that your automatic assumption is that Trudeau and the Liberals are incompetent, but Biden and other members of the Five Eyes have raised the issue with Modi. If there was nothing to the Canadian allegation, then that wouldn’t have happened. The issue sounds more like there is something there, but not enough for other countries to take a firm position on. That’s not unusual in diplomatic discussions.

I think it is possible that Canada does not want to put all of the evidence in public, particularly as some of the information gathering may have been done by our intelligence networks. I for one don’t think that we, the public, are somehow “entitled” to every detail on how CSIS gathers information.

Also, I have gathered that some of the information came from one or more of the “five eyes” allies. I also don’t expect them to “back up Canada” by exposing themselves.

But hey. The National Post tells us we need to hate Trudeau here, so who am I to argue.

In the big picture, everyone thinks India is both a huge future market and an important counterweight to China. This is not to say that certain acts clearly cross the line, involving both domestic and foreign issues, especially when sovereignty is at stake. Just that not everyone will be in a hurry to address or amplify them. Presumably the US were involved with the original intelligence. I am just a simple caveman. I do not know what the evidence is. I could not say which actions are best. But I do wonder when it comes to these things, and other things like subsidies, whether the US gets an advantage by having someone else speak more loudly than they do. That being said, whatever happened happened in Canada. I think we’d often be better off by asking ourselves and considering, “What would Australia do?”.

Yes, I suspect this is what’s going on. Canada is taking the public, political heat, while the US is working in the background, making it clear to the Indian government that they went too far, and can either dial it back, or face more consequences. There’s no way Trudeau would have gone off half-cocked on something like this, knee-jerk anti-Trudeau opinions notwithstanding.

Canada should smile and remove the 41. Then shorten embassy hours to one hour every morning.

Good luck getting your tourist visa, or student visa.

Then just wait. I don’t think it would take long for pressure from inside India to get this action reversed.

On any given day there are many thousands of applications in the works for immigration to Canada or to study in Canada. If that grinds to a sudden halt, I think the Indian government will be pressured, by the connected, (that’s who send their students here largely) to swiftly reverse this nonsense.

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Just based on relative population size, there’s probably a lot more demand for such things on the India side than the Canadian side.

But that raises another question: Yes, Canada is pretty small, population wise, so how hard would it be for these people to find another option for going abroad? If the US or places in Europe increased allowed visa by a very small percentage, that wold replace all the Canadian visas, with very little obvious difficulty.

It is not unusual for some governments to enact policies favouring certain groups. The Indian government has reportedly done this while claiming to be democratic. Since this is part of their power and appeal, they are not overly concerned with the consequences and may give little weight to the opinions of Canadians or domestic students. Canada actually does want closer relations with India, for the same reasons many do - a large market, intelligent people, a democratic alternative to China or others which, to Western eyes, might benefit from more democracy. More so since there is a sizeable diaspora. Canada has been placed in a difficult position if the allegations are true, and acted recklessly if they are not. I think Canada should hide their time rather, acting maturely rather than reactively, and let the facts speak.

Note that there were a lot of Ukrainians fighting against the Soviet Union in WW2 who were not part of the Nazi military. [Ukrainian\_Insurgent\_Army](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_Insurgent_Army). The people issuing the invitation may have been vaguely aware of this and had no idea that the Nazis had several SS units recruited from eastern Europe, and that this guy may have been in one of them. Having said this, the home-grown resistance were pretty evil as well, and openly admired the Nazis. They did continue for almost a decade after WW2 ended, and are one of the justifications invoked by Putin for the whole Ukraine=Nazis schtick.

Yeah, that’s the problem. Those cats were hip-deep into the Holocaust and other ethnic massacres. Even if this guy was not an actual card-carrying Nazi and had at some point fought the Germans as well, he wouldn’t have had even six degrees of separation from them. More like a half a degree at best.

The Waffen SS was used a lot like Wagner: To put a little distance between the military leadership and various atrocities the regime wanted to be carried out. So the Waffen SS did far more than their share of despicable acts, and the people who volunteered for them knew it.

That said, it’s a little difficult to judge ultimate morality from our perches in a freee, peaceful country. Hard to say what kind of hatred can build inside people who have spent the last few years being ravaged by war. And the Communists were no better than the Nazis, and probaby worse when it comes to treatment of the general population other than the ‘undesirables’.

There has been a huge preference shift towards the Conservatives since September.

> **[338Canada Canada | Poll Analysis & Electoral Projections](https://338canada.com/federal.htm)**

As of today, their projections have the Conservatives with 194 seats if the election were held today. The Liberals would get 90. In fact, you could put all the other parties together and they don’t come within 50 seats of the Conservatives.

I’m not sure what changed, But a month and a half ago the parties were only 3-4% apart in the polls. Now the CPC leads the Liberals by 39-28.
