# Canadians: any updates on Col. Russell Williams?

That was the same deal with the 13 year old Medicine Hat girl who killed her family (with the help of her older boyfriend) - you can look up her name on Google if you want, it’s right there since she was reported as missing before they realized she was a multiple murderer, but since she’s a minor, I can’t type it here and nobody in the media can publish it.

I remember that case.

Why can’t you type the name here? Surely you, as a member of the public, can type the name on a message board? Will the thought police come and take you away? 😕

I suppose that posting on a message board is considered publishing.  
What about emailing members, is that publishing?

I can understand limiting the publications of a newspaper or television station, but limiting the speech of an individual seems rather unAmerican. Oh, wait…

Where do you see that in the linked article? This is all I see about the restriction:

Sorry. Perhaps the linked article wasn’t clear. But all over the news radio programs that I listened to, on both CFRA and CBC, they mentioned that the “wife’s” name could no longer be (what’s the legal term I’m searching for?) mentioned.  
ETA: Disclosed?

Her name is Harriman, and there is no order against using her name or discussing the case.

There is a temporary order that bans publication of her domestic contract (the separation agreement she made with her husband), and her doctor’s affidavit and report and the contents thereof, until the court decides on whether or not to seal the entire divorce file. That motion is set to be heard on 24 March 2011.

Nothing formally reported yet, but according to the 15 April 2011 Ottawa Citizen article, the motion to seal the record failed, and the temporary publication ban remains in place.

I was told specifically by the Powers That Be here to not post her name here - seems we are bound by the laws of the country that this board is in and also by the laws of the country that we’re in, which more or less makes sense, I guess.

There is no law or court order prohibiting our naming her or discussing the case on the SDMB or anywhere else. I have posted the link to the order for the publication ban at post [#147](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=13690527&postcount=147).

If TPTB would like to discuss what the publication ban covers and what it does not cover, they are welcome to contact me (I regularly deal with the sealing of court records, publication bans, and privacy law in my Ontario law practice.)
