Re weather: What’s even weirder is sometimes there are American weather maps with the US temperatures in Fahrenheit and the Canadian ones in Celsius, _with no symbols or explanations._ I picture a pair of Americans looking at the map and muttering, “Detroit, 42; Windsor, 6. Guess that’s how they knew where to put the border!” ---

The nasty stuff usually gets moderated a bit as it crosses New York State but Boston gets it not too long after that (in the winter, that is - it’s less reliable in the summer). It is pretty surreal, though, to watch the clouds on the satellite image get sucked into some kind of void at the Canadian border. You’d think it would take less effort to just show the entire satellite image instead of blanking out Canada. Grrr… ---

I agree that Canadians should be proud of their heritage, but try not to get sucked into mindless rabid nationalism like some of your southern neighbor’s citizens… Be proud of the silly as well as the serious, as most of you here seem to be doing. 🙂 ---

Canadians are proud of their nation, I believe. As a Canadian, I think we are just more aware that, like Bob Dylan said, “Patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings”. There is a very good book you might enjoy, by Will Ferguson (Ithink), called “Why I Hate Canadians”, it is full of amusing Canadian ethnicentricities. My favorite story is about a woman who was visiting LA and was involved in a car crash, suffering from amnesia, she was discovered by the highway patrol, wandering the roadway with no identification. The officers were at a loss to identify her, but struck by her politeness. On a hunch they called in to see if any Canadian women were missing and bingo, you guessed it - they were right on the money. Now, exactly how deeply ingrained is that politeness, that even when you don’t know your name you still say please and thank you? ---

Not proud to be Canadian? Every Canadian I know IRL (and I know quite a few) has been FIERCELY proud. Back in high school I had a Canadian born friend who was never shy about his love of his native country, and never hesitated to tell me I was making a stupid assumption about Canada. ---

Someone mentioned, in passing, that Canadians played some part in getting the Iranian hostages (1980-81) released, but they didn’t say how. Anyone know? ---

**Rilchiam:** if memory serves me right, around the time of the takeover some Americans were smuggled out of Iran, “disguised as Candadians”. The political cartoonists and satirists had a field day. Iranian guards, bristling with automatic weapons and swords, facing an amiable crowd of folks in plaid flannel coats, showshoes, caps w/ earflaps and a sled dog or two. It’s always been a source of bemusement to me that Canadians aren’t more, I dunno, vocally _proud_ of their country. There’s a distinct–and _wonderful_–Canadian approach to civil life. And I mean that in terms of courtesy as well as living peacefully and fairly with one another. Here’s a glass raised high, and a rousing cheer for Canada!
