I definitely get the discomfort with making the racist joke itself funny. It’s true that Colbert is a funny guy. He could tell all sorts of not-funny jokes and make them funny. But what’s funny is _Colbert_, not the underlying racial “humor”. It seems to me that this sort of misunderstanding often happens when someone makes an analogy. Someone will seize on a part of the analogized thing and fail to understand the broader point. Yes, Colbert made a tasteless caricature of asian people. But he did it purposefully and satirically to show how idiotic and clueless the people who are _sincerely_ making tasteless caricatures of native americans are.
