# Candiru Revisited

Has anyone seen or heard from **Mjollnir** the last year or so. He seems to have become invisible.

…but I’d like to point out that I brought this to the attention of the Teeming Millions almost two full years ago, in a thread that sank like the proverbial stone:

Second, the Amazon is one weird place. They’ve got fish – granted, MUCH larger than the candiru – that leaps completely out of the water to eat small animals (frogs, lizards, birds, small mammals) that are sitting on branches near the water’s surface.

(I no longer work at the Aquarium, and am desperately trying to remember what this is called. Arapima, perhaps? It’s native name means “water monkey,” that much I recall.)

Oh, I just want to point out, Paolo Petry is considered one of the TOP researchers in this field. Doesn’t make him automatically infallable, of course, but given his reputation for careful, well-documented research, the burden of proof would seem to lie on the doubters.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Cecil included an uncorroborated ridiculous UL in a column without voicing any skepticism. In an earlier column, he repeats a quote by a doctor who said that he (the doctor) had heard a story about some intestinal flatus that had become ignited (somehow) during an operation and had “knocked the attending surgeon against the wall” or some other such nonsense.

Ya know this is supposed to be the _straight_ dope, not the _rumored_ dope.
