Then you probably want to stay away from mushy peas (given that they’re British they may well cane them to get them that way).

All canned vegetables, with exception of tomatoes (which some would argue is a fruit), suck. Tasteless over-salted abominations swimming in their own filth. And don’t get me started on canned creamed corn.

I humbly submit for your approval the only other plant matter which is acceptible from a can:
Sauerkraut
Say what you will, a can is the only place I can get passable sauerkraut around here.
So that makes the list;
1. Tomatos
2. Sauerkraut
3. [not gonna do it]
That’s one short list.
Oh and “Won’t someone PEAS think of the CHILDREN!” :dubious:

I would argue that there are some veggies that are good pickled (beets, carrots, gherkins). So things in glass might be ok, but cans are just wrong for food. Brimming over with wrongness.
Zoid, if your need for veggies is growing faster than the approach of spring, try some of the frozen veggies at the [Trader Joe’s in Chicago](http://www.traderjoes.com/locations/map/688.asp). They’ve got peas and artichokes and asparagus that are not so bad. Frozen food has improved greatly since I was a child (yes, that was quite a while ago).

I actually find frozen veggies passable in most cases.
Canned however are just vile. In a moment of insanity I thought “hey peas, in a can, that’s kind of convenient.”
Little did I know of the betrayal I was about to be victim to.

If you can’t find decent (NOT canned) sauerkraut in _Chicago_, fer chrissakes, you must not be looking very hard.
Here in Brooklyn, hardly a major gathering place of the Germanic Peoples, I can buy excellent sauerkraut out of the damn _barrel_ just fifteen blocks from my place. If I don’t want to walk that far, I can get acceptable B&G or Boar’s Head brand kraut sealed in plastic bags at any supermarket or small grocery.
That canned stuff tastes like…cans.

I have to admit that I am not in Chicago proper but in a near west suburb (Oak Park) and I would kill for a good eastern European meal, dear Og how I long for some roast duck, pork butt, sauerkraut and dumplings smothered in gravy with some chewy rye bread….- and oddly enough, I’m Sicilian.

I also will nominate frozen green beans as fit only for pigs and canned-pea eaters. Concerning beets - purple food is just unnatural, and beets are the most unnaturalist of all. Nasssssty.

ERxcept in borscht. I found a wonderful recipe for borscht in _The Victory Garden Cookbook_ and it’s worth all the effort. YUM.
Actually, if you don’t mind earing violently red-colored food, grated beets added to grated carrots and thin-sliced onions that have been sauteed just limp will give you a wonderful bed for braising meat or chicken.
