Well, I just saw the movie on Friday, and it blew me away. After wading through seven pages of thread that I’ve been avoiding in order to not get spoiled, one aspect I did not notice mention of was Nick’s gambit with his eyepatch at the end. Does his other eye have a different retina scan from his usually-revealed one because of whatever damage was done to it? Or did he replace his lost eye with a transplant, like Tom Cruise in Minority Report? And when he burned his eyepatch, does that mean that he can see well with both eyes after all, and the eyepatch was never anything but a long-game disguise? Or is his lack of an eyepatch the disguise, and he genuinely has only one good eye? For us comic book geeks in the audience, can we expect that Baron Strucker’s European base is Wundagore Mountain? Wouldn’t it be ultra-cool if the backstory can involve the Whizzer and Miss America, another thread connecting the Marvel Universe of WWII with the present time? ---

Everyone has a unique retinal pattern in each eye, just as your two thumbprints are unique. Fury’s eye injury did not damage his retina but the extreme damage to the cornea and lens gives him (at best) light and shadow vision in that eye. The patch makes that less annoying and less shocking to people he meets. They purged the retinal record of Fury’s good eye, but since he had not used the other eye for a scan in decades they overlooked that one, and he was able to access the system with his alternate ID. The eye patch is pretty distinctive, and so he is now using wrap-around shades to not freak people out. ---

I think burning the eyepatch was mostly symbolic - I’m pretty sure he’s blind in that eye. ---
